last tues I returned after 6 hours hunting towards where I'd left the box - parked up in an unfamiliar place. On a whim, 1/4 mile away, I let go of reins & left my horse to make her own way, conscious not to look or lean in any direction other than staright ahead. She went past 4 other gateways & boxes until finding the correct gate, entered and walked up to her box. Did she navigate by smell of the place, the hay in her box, or sight/magnetism?

a few years ago I went out riding over the common in thick fog on my own and got completely lost. I was taken ill while i was out (chronic tonsillitus with high fever etc - didn't think i was feeling right before I went out!) and was getting myself in bit of a state as I was bordering on dellerium (sp). I dropped the reins and Fox completely changed direction and took me across fields etc I had never been in before. He took me over a fairly hefty hunt jump (with me clinging on as I felt so sh1te) and I discovered I was only 15 minutes from home. Fox got lots of carrots when I was finally feeling well again! Still don't know how he did it, I always said he was exceptionally clever!!
