I have seen a few people post on here before saying they feel like giving up horses, and its not even winter!
It just struck me today particularly hard, i just feel like giving up, its just so hard going.
However, I could not give up my mare, she has health issues and is getting on somewhat, if she was young and fit i would probably loan her out in a jiffy.

It doesn't help, both she and myself have had a rough year or two, her rotated pedal bone, on and off lameness, womb infection-currently still of unknown cause, my car crash, the endless vets bills which i have to pay for as she is not covered.
Also went to ride her saturday and she was pretty full of it to say the least, had to hang on most of the ride, she bolted, obviously not feeling too bad is she!

Anyway, i suppose all of this has culminated in me feeling like just giving it all up, but i cant do that to her, no one will loan her, as she is not up to much with the health issues as this would give me a nice break.

So for those of you have have felt the same, how did you get through this time?
Thanks in advance

Triple chocolate brownies to all

Keep your chin up and enjoy it, and remind yourself daily that you are living a lot of peoples dream by even owning a horse.

Hopefully that earns a brownie

By eating triple chocolate brownies, drinking hot chocolate/wine/beer/meths(not!). By coming on here and ranting and raving. By having a few days off. And, by seriously considering selling-up (or otherwise).

Hang on in there hunny.

oh I felt like that a while ago, it does get better, I am still having bad days (like today - I have only been outside to see the horses twice) but most days I am just getting on with it and having better days now.

It does get you down because it is all day every day & no end in sight for you, can you have a holiday? I can't but I am thinking of sorting out a long weekend somewhere before winter - shudders at the thought of short, dark days

I often get that feeling, especially in winter.

One thing I have found that really helps, is to always keep a little money aside, and pay my YO to put her on full livery, just for a week and stay right away from the yard for a week. I'm on an assisted/flexible yard so I can do this whenever I fancy; sorry if thats of no help to you.

But I find a week completely away from the stables - I even avoid driving past if I can - usually makes me realise I miss my horse like crazy and would be bored stiff without her.

I don't know if its a viable option for you; but 'taking a break' even for a week or two really helps me.

I count every day I have with my boy as a blessing as you just do not know how long you have with them.

I lost a horse to colic several years ago and the shock of losing him and the devastation I felt still lives with me. I just wish I could have spent more time with him and savour every moment I have with Archie as a gift. When I am faced with challenging times or feel at my wits end I imagine life without him ... I quicky realise how lucky I am.

You are so right, just having a rubbish time, think its just got to me a bit to say the least, that horrid car crash has just left me a bit on edge/anxious in general.
I could not imagine life without my girl when i think about it, she does mean the absolute world to me, i would be lost without her, i just need to pull myself together really and perhaps scoff lots of brownies to make myself feel better.
Thanks for the words of advice hun, and thanks again to you all, extra brownies all round x

I take a book and a cup of tea upto the yard in the sunshine, and sit and watch the horses with the beautiful countryside stretching away in the distance.

But I am a bit of a poof.

On a serious note, I think that we all feel like giving up at some time. I just try to think of all the lovely times, and what I'd do if I didn't have them! Believe me, it would drive me crazy, and I'd miss them if I didn't have them!!

Even though this morning I didn't think there was anything remotely lovely about any of them!!!

Sometimes a few days away is all you need to recharge!

Yup. Had nearly two days away, and I went straight to the yard rather than straight home. Dizz looked confuddled and was all mushy and cuddly when I gave her a mint. After four days at work this week I'll be screaming to get back to m'neds

I have the opposite problem as mine is lame and I'm going stir crazy. I stayed in bed yesterday until 12 as I had nothing to do! Have you thought about a sharer? It might take the pressure off a bit and more riding might stop her being so fresh. Maybe a student on hols for the summer would be a good place to start and if it doesn't work out, he/she would be off to uni in September. If it does you could either find someone permanent or have an arrangement with the sharer so that they come back during the next holidays. Your local tack shop/riding club might have some ads or you could advertise there or ask around your yard to see if someone knows of anyone.
