How do horses manage these things?

Got back from a 2 day break in Norfolk to discover my clever mare has managed to give herself a nice big cut all across the heel of her left hind. Just how?! It's towards the outside, so it can't really be from knocking herself with her other leg. She's in a field with post and rail fencing, no debris... horses truly are injury magnets :)

But anyway, I've been HibiScrubbing it and applying Sudocrem to keep the dirt out, treating it a bit like mud fever really because of the area it's in. It seems to be healing, but each time I clean it, despite how gentle I am, the scab tends to come off in places. Am I 'messing with it' too much by regularly cleaning it? Should I just leave it to heal for itself?

Thank you :) xxx
