Was thinking that the only animals I haven't seen on my land are badgers and hedgehogs. Are they in decline ?
How do I attract hedgehogs into the garden ?

Badgers certainly are, one of the things i want to do before i die lol is see a live Badger how sad is that!!!

I dont know but when I saw your heading I thought 'what a good idea - keep them off the roads'
I have seen three on the roads this last week in my area

Mine just arrived. They are very noisy you know and if they get at it in the middle of your lawn late at night not only are they noisy but they go on for ages.

i live in inner city nottingham & saw a badger crossing the road one night! probably not where you would most expect it.

Problem is badgers and hedgehogs are not compatible! However we have 3 hedgehogs that are resident, Reggie, Hedgie and the youngster Wedgie. Reggie is at present, and has been for the last 7 weeks at this place:

Due to a massive abscess but is doing well.
We built a hedgehog house and they love peanuts for the birds however do crush them as they can get whole ones jammed in their mouth (we didn't know this until told!) Make sure you have plants around the garden. Odd thing is we live on a very busy military station and we have 3 of them! On all military stations we have had hedgehogs... Here they are:

Hedgie and Wedgie
noisy little so and so's argue all night keeping us awake!)
Finally a very sad looking Reggie who lives in the hedgehog house hubby made but is in hospital and after 2 sets of surgery is doing very well and will come home soon!

Oh and apparently they are now on the endangered list so trying to attract them is good!

Fantastic photo's thankyou. I have just looked on-line and they are readily available from breeders. Strange there seems to be a market for everything these days.
I would rather help out the wildies though and am gonna build a hedgehog house and see if anyone arrives.

Well done you!!!! I think the bred ones are exotic varieties and the rescue lady writes articles against hedgies as pets... Funnily enough we got to handle Reggie as had to and were suprised at how used to people they become. Not ideal but if he wasn't treated he would have died. The lady always tries to rehome them back from where they came. Here is Reggie's house taken last year . All the greenery has covered it now and is far more luxurious. We put sawdust and hay in it and he hibernated there over winter and uses it all the time.

We had one turn up in our garden one night (how it got in is still a mystery to me) my little patterdale didn't take kindly to it so I moved it to the fields near my house where there is lots of dense hedges etc etc.
Two nights later my dog was going balistic at the front door but there was no one there. We left him for a while to see if he would calm down but he didn't so I put him in the lounge and opened the door to find two hedgehogs sitting on my mat leaning up against the front door!!
They ended up wandering into next doors garden as she has a gap under her gate and as far as I know they are still there! If I go into the garden quite late when it is dark you can normally hear them moving around on the other side of the fence!
I would have liked to have kept them myself but not with my naughty dog on the prowl!

Lovely idea to take of the hedgies! If you put food out, the best thing to use is cat food (except for fish varieties). You may know this already but don't do what most people do which is to leave bread and milk - this is really bad for them and the diarrhoea cause by the milk can be bad enough to be fatal!

We have a set just behind our garden and have them wandering the streets and playing in the garden all year round.
The b**gers discovered the dustbin last winter, and decided that tipping it up and emptying it a three o'clock in the morning was just the job! Soon fixed that by putting it up on a milk crate and roping it to the fence
