Went to view a pony yesterday. It was very nice. I rode it but didn't take my daughter (who the pony is for).

Tomorrow evening we're going again with daughter and an experienced friend.

Now if I still like it and want it, do I pay a deposit tomorrow?

Or do I come away saying I'll think about it and ring her then post a deposit cheque?

Or do I get it vetted first? Or what?

Also approx how much deposit - a % of the price? or £100 goodwill?
 
I would put a deposit down to secure the sale, otherwise someone else who may not want a vetting done could whisk it out from under your nose!! BUT on the understanding that it has to pass the vetting.

The seller probably has an idea of how much they would feel was acceptable but I suppose it depends how much its for sale for?
 
If daughter likes pony and you are 100% certain it's the pony for you, leave a (cheque) deposit of 10% of the ponys selling price and organise with seller the vetting.

With one of my horse i left a 20% deposit on the horse before i got her vetted.

Please please please get the horse vetted if you do want to take the pony. Ive had 2 friends that didnt, one horse has a bad front leg that was masked with bute, and the other one has a bad back which also seemed to be masked with bute!

With my horse Angel, i was told she was 6 years old, when i got her vetted and turns out she is 10 years old. I still loved her and paid less than they were looking for her. Old owners seemed genuinely surprised that she was older than what they advertised, they only had her a few months for their daughter, but she fell off and lost interest.
 
A deposit means nothing , they can just give it back if they get a better offer but it is a nice gesture. Having said that most people would keep a horse until vetting with a deposit
 
It is wise to give a deposit on the terms 'subject to the horse passing a full five stage vetting for pony club or dressage or whatever' and ask for a receipt stating that the deposit will be refunded if the horse doesn't pass.
