He is six so no baby and has always had a regular routine for his night time and early morning ablutions ie he goes out for a bedtime wee at ten and then at six in the morning. Lately he is wanting to go out all the time through the night and i let him incase he genuinely wants to go, but then i'm getting no proper sleep. How can I tell if its genuine or he just hears the deer / foxes etc and wants to see them off.

This has been going on for a month now and i'm very tired.

Actually, at six, if he is a large/heavy breed, he is an old man. Maybe he has a bladder problem. If he has always been OK and this is a sudden change in behaviour it might be worth getting him checked over.

Put his leash on, take him out side to a pee spot if he doesnt pee then take him right back inside.
Just dont let him take himself out to wee cause it sounds like to me his is taking the micky a bit!

I can relate as Puppy used to go through phases where she'd wake me up in the night (always genuine) but it is very exhausting.

When you let him out, does he actually "go"?

If you're just letting him outside and can't see, I suggest you do the same as the poster above said and follow him to see; then you'll know if it's genuine and can take it from there (decide if he seems to have a weak bladder/sensitive stomach) all of a sudden.

Yes he is a British Bulldog and was 6 in April so shouldn't be an age thing I wouldn't have thought. I have told him no last night as he asked to go out four times during the evening so am thinking its an exploring thing. He has the usual bulldog selective hearing so can be out for ages aswell.

Thank you all for your help and based on last night I'm thinking it is a want rather than a need to go out.
