how do i keep her tail clean when stabled??

hi all.

just wondered if you guys have any ideas....my mare has a bit of an upset tummy justnow from all the haylage shes been getting. I am awaiting delivery of some live yeast supplement to settle it but unforunatly iv been waiting a while to due terrible weather conditions! she is stabled at the mo (again due to weather) and she is becoming quite smelly (sorry girl!) and her tail is filthy, as its so cold i cant afford to be washing it all the time as it will turn straight to ice! her fillet string on new stable rug is bearing the brunt also lol....i was thinking something along the lines of plaiting or bandaging? i also have a tail bag which i have never used?! although im reluctant to try any of the above overnight incase she rubs her tail (something shes not guilty of i must say) any suggestions??

I think plaiting (just the bottom - not top) is the best you can do really - bandaging and bagging could damage it if it becomes uncomfortable for her and she tries to rub it off.

Remove fillet string for the present & use baler twine (different pieces daily).
Means the nice string can go on when she is more settled again.

Take bull by the horns & wash & rinse tail well, leave as long as poss to air dry as well as rubbing with a couple or more of decent towels etc to help along, then as previous post says: plait it in one long plait if you are able to, but try to wait till its dry - leave the last foot or so free.

Good luck - not nice to do in this weather.

thanks! good idea, i will try that- yes think i will just give it a wash- well i will try , all the pipes are frozen at the mo- having to use a hosepipe attached to the toilet sink as water supply at the yard just now!!
