Hi,

Was wondering if someone can explain how I work out whether or not my jeep can tow?

I know the unladen weight of my trailer, the weight of the jeep and braked/unbraked towing weight. That's all I know

Thanks

It will say in the handbook what weight it is capable of towing. If your trailer + weight of horse & anything else you put in does not exceed that weight, it will tow it.

Then you have the towing restrictions of your licence, but that's another thread :D

Thanks. It's my step dad's jeep but he can't find the handbook... he loses EVERYTHING  Is there not another way you can work it out? I read something that told you how to do it, but can't find the thread.

I can only tow as a learner, but my mum and step dad can legally tow :)

Google the vehicle make / model for 'towing weights' and you should be able to find some info. Failing that, give the manufacturer a ring and ask them.

Sorry, when I say jeep I mean 4x4. It is a Vauxhall Frontera Sport 2.2, 3 door.

The kerb weight is 1671 kg and maximum towing weight is 2400 kg.

I have an Ifor Williams 505. The unladen weight of it is 905 kg and the maximum gross weight is 2340 kg.

FOUND THIS - click dimensions tab
kerb 1672
GVW 2300
Towing 2400

TRAILER HB505
Unladen 905
MAM 2340

That requires a B+E licence or driven under B+E provisional rules
REASONS - GVW 2300 + MAM 2340 = 4640 which is over the 3500 max for B licence towing
Also the MAM 2340 is more than the vehicle kerb weight of 1672

The trailer can be loaded with 1435 (1435+905=2340) and will still be under the towing capacity (actual towing weight) of 2400

Thank you.

Both my mum and step dad have a B + E licence, so they will be doing the towing!

If you have a B licence then give them a break and you do the towing

All B licence holders have a B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence

That means they can tow a B+E combination either loaded or empty and on a motorway providing they adhere to these rules:-
Supervising driver must be age 21+ and held B+E for 3+ years
L plates on front of vehicle and rear of trailer
Correct insurance for B+E learner - check with current insurer
