My thoroughbred mare gets reoccurring abscesses in wet weather, it's annoying as I'm always having to cancel lessons, competitions etc. there nothing serious and burst within a few days with soaking and poulticing I just want to prevent them without constantly stabling her ( she comes in at night ) if anyone has any tips they would be much appreciated! Thanks

this is a good question and something I am also trying to find the answer to, I have been advised by forage plus that supplementing certain vitamins and minerals that are often lacking in grazing/forage can help. Getting your grazing/forage analysed will see if its lacking in anything, if like me you can't do this then a overall supplement may help. I'm trying forage plus hoof health balancer plus extra zinc and copper. May be worth you emailing them?

I can't help, but this is something my horse has never had (runs and touches wood)👉 We had a pony a few years ago who got one but this was because she stood on a nail. I only feed my mare happy hoof with some fast fibre. Would be interesting to know why some horses are prone to these.

Currently experiencing my first abscess. Vet reckons pony has stood on a stone which caused a blood blister which vet has burst. Normally out 24/7' now in 24/7 and I've had to learn quickly how to do a poultice. Thank goodness for you tube.

My girl had one for first time this year & fortunately didn't require vet. I hot rubbed & poultice until it burst out of her heel. Farrier found where it originated when he came 2 weeks later & just did a bit if digging.

I can't be a lot of help either but am another one having my first abscess (well not me, the 3yo!)....vet and farrier said they are seeing so many more this year with the extreme wet weather...they recommended a week in the stable, iodine and a vet wrap/duct tape boot to help it all harden up before he goes back out...but I too am worried about recurrence as it continues to be so wet...so am also looking at what may need to be added to diet to help...I was thinking magnesium, copper, zinc and linseed from my initial browsing, but perhaps some of the barefoot peeps might have some good advice for us??

You need to get the diet amazing - then the white line will be tighter and there is less chance of dirt/grit/stones entering and causing a problem.

Post your diets! (your horses :p)

This.

Also if the horse is trimmed incorrectly (long toes, under-run heels) this opens up the white line, so can make abscesses more likely.
