Hi all,

Im really keen to get my horse to stand square (while holding her head in a nice frame) Can anyone give me any advice? Its not always possible to have someone on the ground watching as I ride alone most of the time. I find it difficult to feel which leg is where & if i shift my weight to have a look shes moves! lol This is something I would like to perfect so we can be smart at shows this summer (not legs everywhere!!)

thanks;)

I am no dressage expert in any way shape or form BUT would say the main thing is to ensure you horse is balanced and is working from behind, not on the forehand. If they do tend to lean then practice transitions- walk to canter etc and also rein back, turn on the forehand etc. Nice and simple but helps them get their weight on to their hocks.

when you are preparing for a halt think about it! If trotting then, prepare - pick a straight line and fix on a point straight ahead of you (do not look down at your horse!). Remember to have your hands help infront on you as if you are carrying a tray, not clamped by the front of the saddle. Think the old line "prepare to halt" and think about what you body's doing. Go to sitting trot (if not already) and consciously think for the halt. Pull you diaphragm in and up and ask for halt using your body. We were told to squeeze our things as well as sucking in our diaphragms and, once you've mastered it it does work. concentrating on something dead ahead helps keep you straight as well soyour horse is less likely to move their quarters when they stand.
