My horse is a skewbald-mostly white- and preparation for a show means bathing etc. the day before. However, the next morning he will be filthy. Especially down his back legs. Also,he is a bit of a stress head and usually by the time he is taken out of the lorry, he needs cleaned again. If he has to go back in lorry, he will need cleaned again!

Just wondered if there was any article of horse clothing that might at least protect him in the lorry. He has hood on , rug and bandages at night, He has boots and rug on in lorry, with tail covered. Or should I just buy shares in Cowboy magic stain remover?

I live for the day horse hair dye comes on the market.

Thanks

I know the problem, I have a mainly white piebald and she seems to get her back legs green just before we go into any arena! Luckily showing isn't our thing, but it's still annoying when I spent most of the day before bathing her. I've had good results with Comfort Gut, which is basically charcoal. It's stopped her being quite so, ahem, runny, which seems to make her aim better if you know what I mean. But a good spray of mane and tail down her back legs and a wet sponge is good as it gets just before we go in to compete.

I feel your pain, my boy is grey and white with a white bum, white tail and white legs. Normally he keeps himself pretty clean, just mud where he rolls which brushes of easily enough and the occasional stable stain which I tend to keep on top of. However, I bathed him the day before a show. he was spotless. Next morning, 50 shades of poo watercolour design on his bum. Washed it all off. Travelled to the show and kept himself reasonably clean. Minute I got on board, runny poo couple with some tail swishing and the 50 shades of poo watercolour design was back in place with seconds to go before going in to the ring. Luckily, judge was very understanding. Washed it all of as best I could before next class, same thing again, luckily same judge LOL

I find he keeps himself pretty much clean most of the time but without fail covers himself in stains the night before a show LOL

I know that feeling - you drop the back of the trailer and your heart just sinks ! Best thing I've ever bought is a tail bag (plait the tail first so it's easy to get in). Also, well-fitting shaped travel boots help as they can deflect the "flow" from the legs. Otherwise, lots of water, shampoo, swearing and threats of dog food !

Thank you for your replies. I have to admit that after cleaning him for the third time yesterday - he was doing dressage- and given his "I'm scared of the nasty flowers" routine in his first class, I was over it!

I think the quarter guard is worth a try. His travel boots cover his hocks well but he manages to sneak some mess down them. Wonder if cling film would work....

I have a black horse and now I don't know why I am worrying...you poor grey/skewbald owners!

I use a tailbag which is awesome...and a quarter guard and leg bandages strategically placed!, particularly if showing as he gets so excited by the time we arrive at the destination its one big mess! Baby wipes are awesome too and other than that a bucket of water and shampoo...

I have not found any other way as yet to stop the mess!!!
