Hi all,

My mare received a nasty kick to the head a week past Wednesday. It required 17 staples which bet is taking out this Monday coming. She also has two big grazes near the site which did not require treatment. I'm considering using Manuka honey to help the would heal/ prevent scarring. Iv not used anything in it yet as staples still in. How long should I leave wound b4 applying & how much/ often should I use? Any honey recommendations or advice at all would b appreciated! :)

I think you have to be quite careful as to the quality of the Manuka honey and its purity. If you haven't already, it might be worth googling to see where to get the best veterinary quality.

If I was you I would ask the vet for advice on that sort of thing to be honest - sounds like a nasty injury and I wouldn't be trifling with it without vet advice. Good luck!

Just googled it myself out of curiosity - the honey for equine use is Active UMF 10+ Manuka honey which you can get from Holland and Barrett. Apparently anything less than 10+ is a waste of time.
