just a query really!

got tons of boks on gridwork etc and all the distances are pretty exact. May not sound correct but i cant find a tape measure long enough (and its a bit of a hassle) to measure out distances properly so when walking courses i allow 8 of my paces for a 1 stride double, 12 for a 2 strided double and 3 paces for placing poles and thats about it! i dont really tend to walk anything thats any longer! - my horse is far to clver and if i mess with the striding it ends up wrong! just wondered how others 'pace' distances out as im wanting to further the gridwork im doing with my 4yo/

well what i do say if i had a double, i do two steps is where the horse lands after the jump then from there i count the strides... four steps is one stride and then im left with a two step gap to the second part of the double which is where the horse takes off.
so basically after the jump count 2 steps for the horse to land then 4 steps for one stride nd then the other two is where the horse takes off

When I do grids, I tend to do them shorter than normal double distances, especially if over two jumps. Varying a double distance with placing pole in centre is very helpful I find, u can make it longer and shorter, but with pole they still have to do just one stride.

two paces each side of the jump for take off and landing, then 4 paces per stride - but saying that, OH normally comes to field when i am jumping and creates fences for me and he has a really bizarre little system worked out - but he gets spooks stride worked out perfect every time!!

for my 14hh it's 4 for a bounce, 7 for one, 11 for two, 14 for three, 18 for four etc. and 3 for placing poles. I count it as 7, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4 ...
