I keep trying to back by welsh a up to stand square but he never does. I've seen welshies standing really nicely and showing off with their hind legs square and quite far back, any tips on how 2 improve my boy as he is loosing marks for this?

Shuffle the horse forwards to even up front legs and backwards to even up back legs (both ways with a gentle nudge).

Then lean down and pick some grass if in a grass arena, or pony nuts from your pocket if on an all weather and use this to tempt your pony into standing still and round.

Practice lots at home.

Never push them backwards to try and find square as the rest of the body will rock back and make them look scrunched up with bad shoulders and dodgy quarters.

Practice at home. Keep a good walk and stop abruptly. The stretched out thing isn't so popular anymore unless you go to the proper Welsh shows like the Royal Welsh or the Winter Fayre.

Alwaysnmake sure the front feet are squared but thebhinds can be slightly off.

This, every time you ask him to stand (litteraly!) ask him to stand square, gently touch the leg (s) that aren't square until he is stood nicely, then carry on with whatever you were doing.

My boy was properly trained for dressage and every single time he stands, he shuffles his legs until he's square, even if thats 20 times in one lungeing session. It just habbit for him now after 10 years of being quietly corrected 15 times a day.
