How do you become a showing judge?

BSPS invite people to train by stewarding with accredited judges and then move on to being probationary judges and then progress to being full judges. I don't know if you can put yourself forward but IME if you steward at BSPS qualifiers and are any good, you will be invited to train. They are always looking for new people.

Hi, you need to be a member of the showing your wanting to judge ie. the CHAPS or the Britsh show horse association, ideally for as long as possible and done at least a year or so of the show season yourself, then you apply to be a steward which you do for a min of 2 years, with out pay usually! and then you can go out on your own.
Each show society may be a little different but thats the general rule, hope that helps :)

Not sure but I know upto the age of 18 (I think) you can do a Young Judges course - my friend has done it and is qualified to judge show ponies at a variety of different levels and shows. They meet every week - I think she usually goes on a Monday 7 - 9pm.
Google it? You should be able to find a similiar course :)

Echo above approach the societies that you are interested in. There are assessment days and then probationary periods for most associations. May be a good idea to get experience judging at local shows to add to your showing cv if you haven't already.

Thanks everyone - I have stewarded before but will defo see about doing it again in the winter season - when the thought of trying to get my boy clean just makes me shiver! and see where we get to.

Do you not need the quals to judge local shows?

Quite a few judges at local shows are un qualified. For our pony club shows many are local instructors, or people who have done a lot in the field they are judging... They are pretty much know by word of mouth locally. I think there is a list for local British Riding Club judges.
