how do you candle an egg.

my hen has been sat on them for six days now. i would quite like to have a go at candling them, what do i need, how do i do it and what am i looking for

Get a very bright strong torch, go in a dark cupboard and put the egg in front of the torch and see if you can see anything through the shell. You're looking for veins spreading out - good pics here of what to look for and what are bad eggs!
Be careful not to shake the egg too nuch, also to not let it get too cold

I found shining the light through an empty cardboard loo roll made it easier - I put the egg at one end and shone the light through from the other end and it illuminated the egg very clearly. But be careful not to drop it!
