How do you do it, and what do you use?

I take my tack apart and clean it with a wet cloth (wrung out) in hot water.
Then I dip the saddle soap into the hot water and wet the soap
The use a dry sponge and soap it up, then sponge the tack

I always use wet soap and dry sponge

you?

I'd never dip the soap in the water, you'd waste it. I use a damp sponge/cloth and rub that on the dry saddle soap.

But then I've not cleaned tack in years so maybe I'm out of date........

i clean with warm water then use saddle soap, drop of water on it and dry sponge, leather balsam is brilliant also used the same way, it helps tack that has gone a bit dry. i hate neatsfoot, rots the stitching.

well i use the Carr Day & Martin sprays, so I have some warm water in the sink, sponge at the ready, take it all to bits, spray, scrub with sponge, wrinse out every 20 seconds so your removing the dirt and not just rubbing it all back in again, so your keeping your sponge clean, dab off any excess water with another clean sponge, leave to dry for a minute or two then spray with the leather conditioner, put all back together again, polish your metal work and tadaaaaaaaarrr..jobs a gud un!
