I use the global herbs one, just because it's easier to pick up with my food. I give 50ml a day, with ten turns of blacl pepper and a dash of oil. Global herbs do a flax oil to go with it, I just thought it was a bit expensive and I use an oil called" I can't believe it's not cod liver oil" Does the job and suits my horse. I mx the whole thing up in to fast fibre which I then mix in to a chaff. I thought it's quite spicy. I'm lucky I have a cob, so apart from a strange look the first time I fed it to him ,he just ate it. If your horse is fussy, you will have to introduce gently. I now also add 50ml marshmallow root and as a tummy calmer. You will see results pretty quickly or not at all. My horse was a changed lad in a week. It did not work for a friend's horse.

I buy 5kgs of turmeric on line, have a pepper grinder in the feed room and use micronised linseed as the oil it is put directly into their feeds and they love it even makes the fussy one eat oat straw chaff which is something of an achievement. The only thing about the micronised linseed is you have to have a ratio of three to one linseed to turmeric ie 1 tablespoon of turmeric to 3 tablespoons of linseed. With oil it is 1to 1

Well you'll need to feed around 500g of turmeric per day to deliver a therapeutic level of curcumin - so I would recommend a very large bucket

seems to work fine on a tablespoon per day pony is lame if the turmeric is not given and sound if it is cant say I know the science just that it works for that pony it is also appetising to my fat ponies so I can add just the turmeric to the oat straw and they eat it they are not keen usually. Anecdotal perhaps but works here

Auslander what is the research on needing 500g of turmeric per day?

I do use it for both my arthritic boys (3x a 'supplement' sized scoop plus micronized linseed and fresh black pepper). My older chap was significantly more stiff when I ran out. This is all the proof I need but I'd be interested in the theory. (I'm not being snappy, genuinely interested). Thanks.

On a more serious note - studies suggest that the therapeutic dose of curcumin for a horse is 15-20g. Turmeric contains 3-4% curcumin, which would mean that, technically, you'd have to feed 500g to see any benefit.

I just feed pure turmeric powder, buy from local Shop or off amazon.
A scoop of it, couple cranks of black pepper and then a gloop of carron oil.
Nothing scientific although if in hard fast work may double scoop him :)

It's cheap, lasts for ages and hides taste of any antibiotics or Bute he may need when injured - so if it helps him it's a bonus! :D

I have noticed that his knee-gal (bit like a windgall but on side of knee, he had it when I bought him as a 4 year old) and it does go down on the turmeric, when I get lazy and don't feed it then you can notice a difference in size!

I always recommend that you get the best quality that you can find , it needs to be at least 4-5% curcumin, Golden Paste Company do a good one, it's raw and 5%. 1 good heaped tablespoon with 10 grinds of black pepper, the piperine in black pepper significantly aids curcumin absorption( proven). Mix with oil such as coconut, linseed or olive, NOT veg or it will not bind but just pass through the gut. I give this once a day but you could go to 2

I've read the research and I know there are doubters and I know it's easy to find it funny but when it works ( for whatever reason) it blinking works. My horse went from staggering in, to bowling me over in a week. It doesn't always work , not for all but it worked for me. Purists will tell you that you have to do golden paste but the capsules work fine for me , I can really feel a difference. My Indian boss swears by it, her grandad took it for years in milk. My horse is happy on it, something is working and I don't want to look to deeply at what :D
