How do you find a field for rent?

Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to go about finding a field suitable for a few horses? I have no idea how it works - do you just see a field you like and phone the farmer (althogh how you find out who owns it I have no idea!) or is there a "land for rent" website that deals in this kind of thing?

put advert on gate of field, where are you are there any local feed merchants, livestock markets, or ask in the village.

Do you have any local yards near by?

Just a thought because YO has allowed me to rent a field of her for the herd. Other yards may also be interested if they have spare grazing.

I have always rented fields and the best way I find it works is by driving around the area you have interest in and looking for fields which are suitable...then I write up a note which I post in the nearby house to field asking if they know who owns the field and that im looking for grazing for my 2 horses etc......
I then wait and see if I get any replies...

find a paddock you think might suit, find out owner and ask

have just done it-have found a lovely paddock with good fencing and water supply. just need to get it cut and build a shelter now!

Yellow pages, ring the farmers in the local area

It always works, Ive never met a rude one where moneys involved, I also make sure I say Im sorry to bother them before asking, on a couple of occasions found farms with stables

If I see an empty field I go and knock on the nearest door and ask if they know who owns it!
Thats how I found my previous fields, and when I was 15 when I 1st bought Buddie! It always works!

Wow thanks for all the replies, I will give everything a shot! I suppose I should also ask - how much do farmers tend to charge for rent of a semi decent field?

The reason I'm thinking of doing this is I'm currently at a yard where my horse is very happy but I've become self employed in the last 6 months and obviously income isn't a set amount each month. All I've ever wanted is to be able to afford a flat and so if I could cut down on my horsey spending each month that would be a great help!

Oh and I'm in Aberdeen. Drumoak to be precise and so plenty of field nearby, suppose I just need to get busy with the investigating!
