My fencing and stables were put up 5 years ago and are in need of a facelift but i'm not sure what to paint them with. The stable yard is oak and tannalised and the fencing just normal post n rail when I bought it but now its gone grey / green so not the most attractive colouring.

I need to waterproof and smarten it up and am not sure what to use.
A local yard has black coloured post n rail and that looks smart.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Creosote - best wood preserver ever.

Purchase is limited to professional use only so you'll need to find a farmer / fencing firm etc to get some for you.

Down side is that it is smelly and messy to apply.

My post and rail is all chestnut. I prefer it now it's gone grey I think it blends in and looks natural. I don't put anything on it. If I had to though I would use Cuprinol available in any colour you like even clear. It is environmentally friendly too. It can even be used on beehives.

I've just spoken to Redmire who built the yard and they have recommended cuprinol, Sadalin ( sp ) or protech.

Anyone any experience of these.

LB - I have chestnut up the driveway but the fences are normal but have to say I prefer them with colour.

Hi, we use 'Bedec Barnpaint' - it's fabulous stuff a bit expensive but well worth the expense. Guaranteed to last for 10 years and it gives a beautiful glossy finish. We did all out softwood field shelters in it in black and they look so smart.
