hi
guys was just wondering how you keep yours horses clean before shows,
i have a traditional coloured who starts the night off spotless with neck covers and rugs on,also a complete new woodchip bed,but still in the morning he has stains, which prove hard to get off,
so what are all your ideas?xx

do your best the night before and wake up early enough to wash anything off last minutue!!!!-or brush off but mine will usually have big wet poo stains (on a blue and white)on her legs or head-always one of the two or BOTTH!!

white chalk and a grooming block are also an esstential parts of grooming kit!!

I don't do the white chalk anymore. Judges can tell it is there!

I find that a damn good bath the night before and spraying alot of coat shine on while wet helps stains to wash off the next morning with just a damn sponge.

I also put my little "white" grey a lightweight summer turnout on that is very deep in the girth. Wraps under her belly and down to her hocks. She can lie down all she wants and I know her quarters won't get dirty. sometimes she gets muck on her neck but like i said, wash with a damp sponge next day and it lifts straight off.

Dont think any amount of covering up would prevent mine from putting his nightly body mask on! :) lol. Still he's definately a 21st century male and at least he's looking after his skin *ahem*
He also wears a sheep sh*t moisturiser during the day that he smothers on himself. :) (in 12 acres and only a small herd of sheep im impressed he can get it all over himself- that must take quite some effort on his part!)

Ah! Slinky I see your horse subscribes to the same skin care routine and fragrance choice as my own cremello, and as there are swallows nesting in his stable he looks like an appaloosa at the moment !

Snuggy hoods etc www.snuggyhoods.co.uk well worth the investment mine even travels to the show in his so no grooming in the morning take off and silky shiney underneath they are also breathable you can get a full outfit as for washing legs my coulered always had a massive stain on his thigh every morning use a shampoo that has a bright yellow and purple cover can't remember the name but its the best product for whites !! will get the name for you later thats if no one else comes up with it before good luck, Sue.

There is an amazing blue shampoo that the queen uses on her greys. You can order it from the fab website below. I've used it on my grey and you wet the stain apply the shampoo neat and then leave it for 5 mins then rinse and its pure white, fantastic. Its also good used neat on yellow tails that should be white.

Poor you! My horse is orange and thats bad enough! Let alone trying to keep a beige horse poo free! :) lol

thanks guys,i will keep all your tips in mind,
lol its not only the body i have to keep clean its the long mane tail, and loads feathers lol
thanks xxxxxx

The only way to keep mine clean is:
Slinky hoods
Slinky blankets
Bandages on legs
Tail wraps
I will try to explain my tail wrap. I divide the bottom part of the tail into three like I am going to plait it. I then drop all three parts into tubes made of old bedsheets (feed them in from the top of the tube) so that they are covered from the bottom of the dock to the very ends of the hair. Then I plait the three parts like normal finishing with a hair band on the end. This keeps the tail clean. My horses wear this all the time, keeps the tail nice and thick and long.
After baths I use lots of show sheen to keep stains off. I have posted photos here before of how nice my horses look at shows and let me tell you keeping appaloosas clean is a challenge! Just look at Keepers tail and that will show you what those wraps can do for it! Ok now you know the American secret to long thick clean tails!

All of ours (until Sunday!) were wearing either the Dress Circle all in one lycra bodysuits (which Lucinda Green described as babygros!) or Snuggy Hoods. The babygros are very comfortable for the horses as they are extremely stretchy, and they stop them getting too hot.
