how much weight a horse can carry. based on an earlier post i was just wondering everyone seems to just know how to tell. i know its something to do with how much bone a horse has but how do you measure this? please help and sorry if this is redundant but i've just never understood this. if anyone can help me much appreciated.

Measuring bone is not a definitive answer as some animals, such as arabs, have very dense bone but fairly slender legs. Arabs can carry a lot of weight.

Generally the shorter backed horses, like Arabs and Spanish Mustangs, Icelandics etc. can carry more weight. Rule of thumb for most breeds is a 1/4 of their body weight. For the shorter backed horses like the above it is a 1/3 of their body weight.
So my stallion weighing 400kgs could carry 125kgs max. Luckily I only weigh 70!
