How do YOU longrein???

Star had her back sorted today along with her treatment for spavin last week so now have the all clear to start slow work again. Soooo im going to begin with longreining, but havnt dont it for years. When you have the lines running along side of horse, do YOU have them through the rings of surcingle/stirrups or have them loose??? I cant remember lol..

Also any other ideas for work i could do apart from lunging....
 
Are you doing driven longreining, or longreining on a circle (like lunging)?

G usually has a bridle with a lunge rope (I might try and replace these with driving reins as i'm always tripping up) clipped onto each ring and then going through the biggest upper side rings of his Mark Todd roller. It was great for introducing lateral work when he was younger.
 
I long rein my unbroken youngster & he wears full tack, stirrups down & loosely fastened under his belly with an old stirrup leather. I put the long reins through the stirrups - I'm a bit clumsy at times & feel safer if something is keeping the long reins up! I find this is fine for straight lines & circles bt then I don't do any fancy work with him, just boring walk, trot, halt & rein back.

Ok, right. Well I'd long rein in a snaffle bridle without a noseband, but with the reins twisted up, and a lunge cavesson. I'd also have a roller with rings, and slidy string loops tied to them. I'd attach long lines to the bit, through the string loops on the roller, and to my hand. If I hadn't long reined for a while, instead of attaching the lines to the bit, I'd attach them to the side rings of the cavesson, to stop me fracturing my horse's jaw when she took off and I was left lard-lumping behind her

I usually carry a schooling whip - but only with non-kickers as I'd rather not have impromptu dental work

And if possible, I'd go out and about - round the yard, out for hacks as going round the school is intensely dull, and hard work.

ditto this - though I do sometimes take them through the top ring and have both reins on one side. (if you see what I mean)
 
Ooh i like the idea of putting through string loops instead of actual rings on roller....sounds safer!! The last time i longreined was breaking in my last mare years ago and remember she was a right pain, but if the reins were through loops and then she had a fit it would make her worse cause they obvisouly pulled against her!!!

Agree with Shilasdair - this is how I long reined my lad when he was brought back into work after 9 months off! I didn't use the lunge cavesson though - I attached the reins to the bit then through loops to my hands.
Agree 100% with the long reining on a hack etc. not just in the school - I long reined for miles, working in straight lines and I think he really enjoyed being out & about!
I also started basic lateral work on the long reins.

This is how I do it as well

You can do all sorts of things on long lines...hacking, roadwork, walk poles (trot poles, too if you want), lateral work.
I once had to keep my mare in full work for about 3 weeks by just long reining whilst her saddle/back was sorted. It nearly killed me, I was so unfit.

the first time I ever long reined Axel I forgot to secure the stirrups, I put the line through them and off I went quite happily, however when I turned him the stirrup flew up the lunge line and hit him in the face, poor pony

Now I long rein with a roller with the reins going through the bottom ring on the side.
