as above - have never had a horse that bucks until today - only little excited one in an open field but realised i dont know what to do other than sit back deep pull up his head and kick on - is that right?
You shouldnt sit back- you should remain in normal balance and that will help you to keep head up. Keep rein short enough nd keep the ears on top with the neck up.
Either try to hold the head up and ride them forward through it or take your wait into your knees so they don't get you of and turn a tight circle to throw them off balance.
You can't really stop a horse from sticking in the odd buck. I quite like it it means they are enjoying the ride too! Obviously if a horse is broncing that is a different issue.
The horse i ride does a litle one when i send him into canter for the first time! Hes just gets excited! But i normally just make him do what i was trying to get him to do originally as it take his mind off it! But his are really little
I had to stop my first buck with Malaga the other day! Something wasn't quite right but like an idiot I still got on and his saddle slipped forewards! He bucked straight up and down so I pulled on the one rein and asked for his head which he gave me as he'd been taught but his whole body language said "Get Off!"
I did the emergancy dismount and sorted the saddle and remounted and everything was O.K.
Main aim is to try and not let them get thier head low enough to do it in the first place. A straight up and down but is pretty easy to sit to (i've never been got off by a straight buck but thats years of riding at a rather sh*tty yard for you) its the buck with a twist thats the killer
i have always found that if you cling like a limpet and sit slightly forward in your seat and have contact on the reins you will be fine!
its all about experience with bucks
then my horse bucked for britain when he came - i bought him on his buck as i have never seen a horse buck that vertical!!! at his first event this season he never stopped bucking - bucked in warming up for dressage, sj and xc!! it was the leap about and twist kind of buck - he was leaping around enjoying himself - he enjoyed scaring the little grey pony that was warming up
he bucked today and i was really pleased - he hasnt bucked since that event and he does it when having fun! (we were practising our gallop for showing)
a buck is lovely if it is out of enjoyment, but is horrible if they are actually trying to get you off
i would never touch a horse that bucked evils! they are not nice to ride.
my horses back is checked regulary and saddle fits. he bucks for fun - he enjoys himself which i love to see and hope it long continues
Wow I REALLY hope some of you are 100% sure your horses are bucking for pleasure and not for pain.
As for stopping a buck, the only thing I think you can do is if they are on the spot or doing a series of them in a row - ride forwards, drive them on,and/or give them something to think about! With F a growl is usually enough to prevent any more. As for sitting to the normal up/down kind, I am told I look very elegant when sitting to bucks!!
I just think of it a bit similar to the opposite way around to jumping - sit up, so that you are always over the centre of gravity.
