How do you store your rugs in the winter?

We seem to be at the funny time of the year when I'm swapping between lightweight and mediumweight rugs, I just wondered what everyone else did with regards storage? I have the luxury of one section of those rug racks but with 3 rugs on it it seems to be groaning! No-one else at the yard seems bothered but I have to admit to being a tidy freak and I'm sure when the rugs are sopping wet it will be a problem.

Just wondered what everyone else did. horse ownership and winter is all new to me!

TBH once we get into winter that tends to be it for me - I just put on the heavier rug and then get all the others cleaned and store them in plastic bags if not needed over the winter. Keep only the ones you use regularly on the rug rack so they can air and dry out. As for the others, have you considered buying a trunk? B&Q do some big green plastic ones at about £45 - brilliant for storing rugs, saddle cloths etc in.

There is some dead cheap pine racking at places like do-it-all. £10 to £15 for about three shelves, if you have somewhere to put it. when mine are dry I fold them roughly and put them on there.

I've got one of those green B&Q trunks for when they're not being used, it just seems at the moment that I'm putting a lightweight on one day, mediumweight the next - like today it was 9 degrees, but Sat it's going to be freezing - I'm not very good at this!

If you look in Argos for storage, they have a set of large bags which are great. I can get five big rugs in one, another has the sun lounger cushions in, you get the idea? They don't take up much room but do keep them tidy.

Put your lightweight rugs, neatly folded on the top runner of your rack arm, your other rugs on the bottom. If you colour code your rugs, easy for YO to see they've got the right one, they can easily reach whichever rug they need and they only ever have to move one rug at a time.

well i am soon moving to a fab little yard not far from my current one where there will be lots of big rug racks on the wall and heaters to store my rugs

i will probably wash the lightweight soon and store it somewhere airtight, they are so small once folded up, the lightweights, i may keep it in a box up the yard or at home once done

Rugs i'm using get hung up in the stable, rugs i'm not using get put into the metal storage bins we have in the barn. Ones that may be needed get hung up in the barn. Just use bailer twine to hang them up.

I've got a beam across one of my spare stables with huge hooks on it, like massive coat hooks. I hang them by the front buckle. I've also got a totally fab dryer which is an oil filled radiator on wheels like a horse length heated towel rail. Mine go on there when they're wet & sometimes stay there til I need them.

The unsatisfactory thing about rugs is that even hung up, they don't look tidy.

I keep a wheelie bin in the field that has the 4 or 5 rugs that I'm currently using. Rest of his rugs either stay in big boxes in the tackroom, hanging over his stable, over a gate somewhere or hanging up to dry.

thanks for the ideas, I think Catembi got the measure of me, I hate mess - how tragic is that in a horse owner! Think the YO must love it because I'm always sweeping up!!
