As in what order?

After grooming i put on bridle then my saddle. I was always taught that its unlucky to put the saddle on first!! So I never have. I watched someone tack up the other day and they put the saddle on first and I found myself thinking "ooooh she has bad luck is she going to fall off??"

So anyone else have a special routine!!

Has anyone heard its bad luck?

Always saddle first as he's tied up!! If I tack him up loose he box walks. Also he's a presistent itcher, particularly after riding so I have to get the bridle on last and off first as he tries to wipe it all over the blockwork and as it cost about £125 I don't want it all wrecked.

Depends if they wear a martingale or not. If they do then bridle first. If not, then saddle first

Actually that bad lucky thing may be true, as I always put a saddle on Doug first, then bridle and I always end up getting bronked off or something

Oliver is always good, and never got me off. Or it could be because Doug is 4, and Oli is 14

I put the saddle on first (if no martingale etc) no particular reason just because while I'm faffing around and putting on the bridle etc by the time I go back to the saddle its ready for pulling up rather than pulling it up straight away, then as soon as the bridle is on, we are good to go, also I usually groom/tack up while they chomp on a hay net so I make sure have chewed the late mouth full, othewise they get it clogged up in the bit.

Usually saddle first when the horse is tied up but if he's loose in the stable then the bridle first.

I would have thought the bad luck thing was the other way round actually as I always thought to put the saddle on first to warm the back up.

Saddle, breastplate then bridle. I wouldn't use a martingale that looped through the girth as I like to get my saddle on and girthed up a little a good 5 minutes before I mount.

So I saddle, breatplate then faff, fix her hair, headcollar off, play the I'm going to escape game, bridle on, walked round yard, girth tightened, walk a bit more, girth tighted, walk a bit more then mount...you wouldn't know I used to own a horse with a cold back would you?!

I must be doomed as I always put the saddle on first!

My order is....

Groom
Knee boots (if hacking)
Saddle
I put my hat on, gloves in pockey and don high viz if I'm hacking
pop bridle on
stand with horse whilst I put gloves on
lead to block....get on and go.

If I used a martingale, obviously I would have no choice but to bridle first.

Boots, saddle, faff, my hat on, gloves in pocket, tighten girth slightly, bridle, lead out, gloves on, tighten girth, walk around yard and then get on!

PrincessSpark1e, you and me both!!

If I hack then I put the breastplate on before the saddle and re attach reins onto the martingale bit once I've put the bridle on.

Saddle first as I used to have a horse that would chew his reins, if I took me eye off him for a second, he wrecked a couple of pairs before learnt my lesson, I dont use a martingale. What I think is important or am I just a but of a H&S (elf & safety nut) I tack up in my stable not on the yard.

Bridle first here as well!

I was always taught bridle first just in case the horse got free you'd have something to catch them with if their bridle was on rather than watch them disappear with their saddle on! I'd rather lose a £40 standard bridle than a £400 fitted saddle!!

Ditto Eriskayowner, I remember getting severely told off at a riding school for taking my bridle off before saddle ( I was about ten and scarred for life!!) cue lesson for life: bridle is always the first to go on and last to come off!

I do bridle, saddle, boots (if any going on)

That's what I have always been taught too! Always Bridle first whether martingale on or not.....

Glad it's not just me who was traumatised like this then! It does make sense though!!!

I do saddle first as Roger is slightly cold backed, then boots and bridle last as he likes to stand and stuff his face.

When i get back i take his bridle off first as he's a horror for rubbing his face.

Mine is never tied up to tack up, I expect him to stand, though sometimes when he's not in the mood he does try to slink to the back of his stable

Saddle on first, to give time to do the girth up hole by hole, then I put on my hat/boots/chaps/high viz etc, then get my whip & gloves, then bridle. I usually do the girth up a hole each side in between each stage, once more when I walk him on to the yard, once when I get on and once more when riding.
Untacking I take the saddle off by the car on the way back down the hill, take the girth & numnah to hang up in the stable, take the bridle off and wash off the bit.

My routine is groom, boots, saddle then bridle. I only tighten the girth one hole when I first put the saddle on. Then I faff around with the bridle as she tends to become a giraffe at this point, then tighten girth again. I faff around getting me ready, tighten girth, lead out then when I mount I tighten my girth one last time.

When I come back I take saddle off first as she always tries to escape so I have the bridle to grab hold of!

Collar, back pad, breeching, traces, reins, faff/get carriage out, Bridle, finish reins, put to! Teee hehehe, I wanted to be different.... I go mental if anyone doesn't put the collar on first 1) major bad luck, 2) easier if you put it on first anyway.

If I'm riding at arlington its genterally headcoller, lead ropes and away! lol

The two riding schools I'm at horses normally have saddles/boots on so I just have to wack bridles on. On the odd occasion I do tack up, boots, saddle, faff, bridle!

Groom, boots, saddle, martingale, do saddle up, take headcollar off, bridle on and link reins through martingale.
Saddle off first to untack.
I was always told the bridle first etc as a child but then a lady I worked for always did it saddle first and I got into the habit and to be honest I found it easier as it gives me somewhere to put my saddle as I wont put it on the floor.

me too but no boots!

Always boots, saddle on back, breastplate, do up saddle lightly, get me ready, bridle and reins through breastplate... then off we go!

Bridle always first to come off when we get back too.

Isn't it wierd how you get used to a routine!!

I put B's saddle and breastplate on first. Then go out of the stable for 2 mins whilst I empty poop scoop and collect bridle and my hat. By which time B has pooped, she then comes to the door waiting for me to put her bridle on, stretch out her legs, tighten her girth, pop in a polo and off we go !! She's brilliant, I never tie up to tack up as she happily munches from her hay bar whilst I groom and get her ready for mummy squishing her..
