Well this supposedly (sp) works, using a front leg when she is 6 months old, measure from the ground to the point of elbow in inches, then double is and that's the adult height. I guess you then divide by 4 to get hands??
No, that's not quite correct. Measure the foal's leg (at around 6 months) from the middle of the fetlock joint to the elbow (olecranon process), and take the same distance upwards from the elbow, to give the final wither height.
Do you know the height of the dam and sire?

yes dam is 16.1 and sire is 16.3 - but my foal is huge at just under 5 months !!! im hoping she is doing all her growing now x
Troy was pretty big at that age, and is now even bigger at 7 months
His dam is 16.2hh and his sire is 16.1hh, but he has been estimated to make 17hh by the vet on his registration documents. I just hope he has it right, as at the moment he looks as though he will make a little bigger than that. He is already in a 5'9" rug

Oh dear. I hope his growth stops below 17hh for you.

The last one we bred (before this year's foalie who should make 12.2hh) had a mum of 16hh and Dad of 17hh and ended up 18.1hh - honestly! He was too big for much and certainly for me at 5'4"!
