Very strange wording for the question but im just wondering how your non clipped tb's moult?

Its just because M has been moulting loads (first winter living out not clipped very well rugged) but now when shes moulting, she has under coat coming through, but in some patches (bum, inside her legs and now on her back) have been going "bald".

Now when I first saw it on her bum, I thought "oh no .. mites .. lice .. pinworm lalala" so I rung the vet out he comes .. completly puzzled! Its not mites, lice or pinworm. Shes completly non itchy. Vet said to wash in dermoline insectal shampoo, and then 2 days later wash her in it again, also she has been wormed (equimax).

I have done this but its just strange the way its all coming out, but not much summer coat is underneath?

This is the first time ive experienced her moulting (bought her august 2010) So im not sure if its just the way she moults or not. Vet thinks its just the way she moults but if it gets worse then ill ring him and he'l give her some anti biotics? Anti biotics for what? Vet doesnt no what it is and thinks shes just moulting?

Very sorry long post! Im just wondering if anyone elses tb moults in patches and how long does it take for the summer coat to come through the bald patches? .. When I say bald its not right to the skin, its black underneath.

Also, I havnt used anything new for her to have any allergies to so can't be this.

Mine wasn't clipped either and lived out over winter but he's moulting normally. There's shed loads coming off him but he hasn't any bald patches. My friend had a TB who used to moult similar to yours. She used to get bald patches on her legs and face.
It may be just the way he moults. I hope it all evens out soon.

My tb does this as well, mainly on her bum. She has got quite scurfy skin (had bad rainscald on her bum when I got her) as well and it comes out in chunks with bits of greasy skin attached, and like you say not much coat underneath.

She moulted like this last year as well, and had a lovely summer coat so I wouldnt worry :) x

My TB has exactly the same on the insides of all 4 legs and slightly less noticeable either side of his tail! I think it's just how they moult. I gave him a good bath yesterday and rubbed a lot of it out and now it's nearly gone and looks much better now it's not so 'tufty'!

Ohh so mines not the only one! I just get a little worried about her, shes moulting soo much and I go over her with the shedding blade, and it all just comes out. Even with a rubber curry comb. Im just worried the more I keep brushing these areas the more shes going to come out bald - but im not going to stop brushing her as she needs a good groom as shes moulting so much!

Very strange. Everytime I ride I come back and give her a good hose down and let her dry before turning her out, and also give her another good groom. Im worried the more I groom the balder shes going to get? Do you think that itl help the summer coat come through more? LOL

A big thank you to those that have already replied!!

This is my first spring with my TB unclipped (knew him as a racer but he was clipped out then) and he grew a good 3ins (at least) of coat, woolliest TB I've ever seen, and he is looking positively moth eaten atm! He shed armfuls of coat really quickly and I was quite dismayed to find he was bald underneath in places, chest, bits of his back, hips... and I got vet out 10 days ago because of his baldness, who was thoroughly confuddled, said he'd never seen a coat quite like it and couldn't explain baldness - talked of bloodtests etc but we decided to wait a bit longer... within the next week his summer coat started to grow through in his bald patches & I've come to the conclusion he just shed his coat out too quickly?! He's still quite hairy in patches but we've stopped going at him with the shedding blade every day (otherwise he might have ended up really very bald!) and he looks tons better and I wish I'd just been patient and not panicked and had a vet visit for it!

Lol yeahh both vets completly confused mine and yours! I also don't use the shedding blade everyday, but a good 2/3 times a week I like to give her a good whole groom with the shedding blade as it just falls out if I stroke her! Lol tbs aye! Panic panic panic! Lol love her though!

Mine is only half TB but has inherited the TB coat (and hooves  )

Every single year I tell her to blooming well grow some summer coat before you moult! She looks hideous when she is moulting, bald patches all over the place and no sign of any undergrowth! Honestly, if she wasn't ginger I would swear she was blonde! ;)

However, it doesn't take long to suffer the ropey, moth eaten look before she eventually grows her glorious summer coat :)

My girl is exactly the same. Last summer was my first summer with her and she looked dreadful when she was moulting. She's dark bay but goes quite a lot lighter in summer so i had these horrid dark bay patches of long hair with lighter bits of summer coat. She looked like she has some kind of skin disease to begin with! It's not as obvious and is coming out a bit more evenly so far this year but i can see the light patches starting to appear again. I think it mush just be TB's for you. Mine grows the wooliest coat i'd ever seen on a TB too, she looks like a native in the middle of winter but she does live out 24/7 and isn't clipped so thats probably why.

Mine does this he looks like he has rain scald and moths have been eating him. And where my clip line is its coming out in chunks which is making my clip look worse then it actually is!

Almost done though, I reckon only a couple more weeks. :)

You shouldn't worry so much... if the bad things have been ruled out then it's just a moulting pattern.

Not just tb's... the two cobs here moult in "tufts" too. It looks hilarious!! Give it a week or so like Kokopelli says and it'll be like a butterfly has emerged from it's cocoon! :D

It got very warm very quickly this spring, so i guess the horses were trying to get rid of the thickness without waiting for the summer coat to arrive! Mine went bald in places but it's all better now so don't panic too much.

my TBx always gets a bald patch on his bum every year when he moults, it all evens out eventually...it just requires suncream regularly at moment as he has pink skin!!
