The JRT has always been besotted with son no 1, R. R has been home from uni for the summer, and the JRT has been in his element, with extra fuss and cuddles (R is rather a soft touch).

R has been out and about quite a bit during his holidays with work, cricket and socialising. The JRT would wait patiently for him to return, often parking himself by the front door or the gate.

On Sunday, R packed up his possessions and was driven back to uni by his Dad. The JRT adopted the hang dog look that canines do when confronted with suitcases, and looked rather sad even when R gave him a final cuddle.

But there was no waiting by the door or the gate, and no bustling expectantly past OH when he returned much later that day, looking for R. No padding round the house til all 4 of us are home.

He knew.
