Had him three weeks now and he is coming on well.

His weaknesses are:

one the flat he falls out through my right leg on the left rein

jumping he makes too much ground in distances and will have a fence in front.

Sorry for overload! Would like opinions on how he looks and I am pleased so far :D

He's much, much further on than m rising 6 yo! Mine is still establishing canter transitions and getting off of the forehand (ex-racer).

He looks really nice :)

Thanks! We are working on our walk to canter at the moment and shortening his canter as that is where he will struggle competing (doubles and related distances he makes too much ground)

I'm hoping that once he gets over his splint, I can start establishing his canter transitions further and getting him to accept a contact (pull means stop type contact :p )

It'll all come with work :) Good luck with it all :)

I don't think he made up too much distance , if you pause video looks like he was on a good stride but just not picking up front quick enough, I think that just shows he is green, and was rushing a little.

My lad was rattling poles , I was worried he just did not care but just of late he really started to neaten at the front , now our canter has better rhythm.

When the canter becomes more balanced I think his jump will improve.

He looks a nice honest sort, just my cup of tea :D

I see what you mean actually! He does sometimes rush his fences but seems to want to try and be careful, if that makes sense! I think it is a green thing. My previous horse went through a poley stage before being very very careful. Going to jump a grid in the morning to try and sharpen the front end up. Looking forward to jumping sat and seeing what improvement there is. He is already very different from when I got him three weeks ago! Hopefully he will get to where I want him *fingers crossed*

Thanks for picking up on that I will get him to slow his jump down a little and think more before the fence :)

Lots of things I've learn that can help you teach them to neaten up, I was worried about my lad and afew lessons with a SJ guy I know and he much neater, but this was quite recent and I'd say Ludo is more established than your lad, he a bit older too just turned 6.

He was using v -poles and lying a pole across top of a oxer, made him really think about snapping legs up and now if we have a nice canter , on his hocks , the fences seem to come nice.

Took us a few months to get there. At one point he was wearing fences and not caring, but we past that now. His learning curve I guess.

3 weeks is no time at all, so just keep doing what your doing if he already improving well

Good luck with him :D

Oldenburg's are super - but then I'm maybe a tad bias lol

They are super! To be fair hes only touched a couple fences in the time I have had him! He is careful but more so behind than in front! Grids will be good tomorrow I think. Yes I have done V poles and that with horses before as had quite a few to produce. I just like to see other people opinions as I know I can be a numpty at times!
