How does your dog react when you're ill?

Nurse Henry has been looking after me today

I was amazed at how good he was!

Basically I have primary dysmenorrhea (I think that's how it's spelt), which without going into too much detail means basically that I have absolutely agonising cramps once a month. Normally they are controlled with painkillers from the dr, but like a fool I ran out and my repeat prescription wasn't ready in time so I've spent a large part of the day lying around in various unsuitable places, like on the bathroom floor because I couldn't get up without fainting

He has been a little star - stuck with me like glue rather than getting up to mischief as he normally does when he's allowed upstairs. When I managed to get into bed he just hopped up and stayed curled up beside me - generally when I try to have him upstairs for a lie in he gets bored and starts causing trouble but he stayed with me for about three hours while I could hardly move. It made it much better to have him there, it's not nice being all on your own at times like that.

He hasn't even had a walk today - luckily the bad stage only lasts half a day at most so by tomorrow I'll be able to take him for a really long walk to make up for it.

Not a response to the doggy part, but is there anyway you can get to a pharmacy for Feminax Ultra and double-dose until your prescription is ready? They're only 250mg of Naproxen, but possibly worth a try if Naproxen works for you?

Thanks - I wish I'd known that as Naproxen is what I take, I was trying co-codamol but it was about as much use as a chocolate teapot

Now that the worst is over I should be able to manage with the traditional hotwater bottle, hot chocolate, more chocolate, and more co-codamol, perhaps with some chocolate - but I'll remember that if it happens again (not that I EVER plan on being so stupid again!)

I'm very lucky really - when it's bad it's awful but it doesn't last all that long. Trust me if it was still bad I wouldn't be able to speak for this long, never mind type!

Very sweet! (Henry, not your painful period!!!). Dizzy is also very attentive when anyone is unwell!

For what it's worth, I used to have extremely painful periods (so debilitating that I needed to take 1 day out of life a month!), but the pain disappeared when I went on the mini-pill (normal pill was no better for the pain, it was the mini-pill that made it disappear). It was total luck I stumbled on this and I have no idea why it worked, but it's a life saver!
 
I haven't tried the mini-pill - I was on the normal one which knocked the pain out but gave me such awful mood swings I felt like I was losing my mind once a month! Naproxen is really good though - I was just so stupid to run out, I mean it's hardly like it's an unexpected occurence by the time you reach the age of 27!

I also suffer from v.painful periods, only the very first day, but Florimell has no idea

It's very sweet that the doggies know isn't it?

We had a young friend staying over (he was about 14) at the time and him mum had been battling terminal cancer for a while (she passed away shortly after he returned home). The TV was on and this advert came on for Cancer Research, the one with the happy ending stories. OH and I were speechless, we just didn't know what to do or say. Dizzy run into the room (I don't know how he knew), jumped on the sofa and totally smothered the boy. The two of them just sat there cuddling, it was very sweet.
 
Oh Florimell - whatever happened to female solidarity? Although it is worth pointing out that I actually had to collapse for Henry to notice anything was wrong - typical bloke

Dogs do have a sixth sense don't they!?! - Just after we got Bruce ( he was approx 10weeks old) my father had heart surgery, to cut a long story short, there were massive complications and we had to make the decision to turn off his life support. The decision came after a phone converstaion with my mum, and after I hung up I just sat there, in the hall and quietly sobbed ( not something I do alot) Baby Brucie was so sweet - he crawled ( god knows how) onto my lap and very gently licked the tears off my face and literally cuddled me for about half and hour, which is a long time when you are only 10 weeks old! I'll never forget that!
 
Tis the same as every other day - I have fallen over quite a few times (pretty steep terrain here) and all they do is run over and go through my pockets while I am lying there, gasping

Awww, I wish Leah was that cute! When I'm lying on the sofa ill, she comes up and huffs dog-breath in my face... that's all the sympathy I get from her!

And if I cry in front of her she gets really nervous and slinks away like she thinks it's her fault, so no cuddles for me there...

When I was about 10, I made loads of noise on the stairs (banging and yelling) and then laid down at the bottom with ketchup (

) smeared on my face to see if Leah would run and fetch help or something (I think I'd watched too much Lassie!). She licked the ketchup off and wandered away.

OMG Charmaine me and my friend used to do that, repressed memory - she used to pretend to hit me and I would fall down and D would just sit there and watch **do not try this at home!!!**

However she must have sensed we were just kidding, a friend of my Mum picked me up and tried to throw me in the sea and she nearly ate him

CC, it did take Henry a little while to twig, I think he thought I was playing a very funny game at first and was jumping about while I was sort of sprawled on the floor whimpering

Then he seemed to catch on ('Oh no, she really is ill and I can't open the food cupboard!') and turned into Nurse Henry, until a couple of hours later when I sat up and he got up and started playing with my socks again

Sweep is a good furry hot water bottle and just uses it as an excuse to kip on the bed all day. The Moo - not so good!!

When I had the flu and was in bed for 4 days he just kept dropping slippers and things on my head for to walk him.....

Hopping have you got any ibuprofen in the house - will be more effective than co-codamol as it s from the same class as naproxen - ie is a NSAID. You can take up to 1000mg every 4 hours if necessary and take paracetamol on top to get any residual pain.

I do have 'brufen, will use it now the worst is over but it's just so hopeless with the bad times I thought I'd try the co-codamol instead! Now I know that doesn't work either.... fun times...

The strongest feminax are good for me, although I don't get that sort of pain all the time.

My dog would more than likely bugger off if I was ill, knowing full well I wouldn't be able to catch him!
 
Otto knows that when I'm in bed (whether ill or not!) he must tread carefully. I do not react well to be woken up by a hyper-active spangle!
It only took him once to learn that too!!

Otto is also a lazy sod in the house and will lie on my bed given any oppurtunity!
 
I have a huge long haired GSD. Last year I had major abdominal surgery and was in so much pain when I came home. My dog frequently came into the lounge (or bedroom) and took me by the hand and made me go to the toilet and then walked me back with my hand in his mouth to lie back down and he 'tucked me in'.

One night, I was asleep on the settee and I woke up because something was in my mouth. My dog had decided I needed feeding and was dropping his own food into my mouth. Nice!!! NOT!!!

He has incredible empathy with me. When I had a miscarriage recently he was incredible and never left my side. He knows when I am sad and his cuddles are the best.

He's my soulmate!
 
Recently had a chest infection and she came to see me when I was coughing in the night. I'm not sure she was being overly concerned or just annoyed I'd woken her up.

I use pharmacy strength ibuprofen (much better than the branded type) and paracetemol - taken together. Find this better than Feminax now as I think they've reduced the active ingredients in this.
