How does your horse stand when ‘at rest’ in the stable?

I am quite worried about one method of ‘resting’ that my rising 5yr old uses… She stands with her bottom jammed against the wall and both back hooves on the tippy toes and her front legs slightly out in front of her :dunno: Its like she is trying to rest both hind legs at the same time time if that makes sens? Now she is happy 100% sound and well in herself she does rest normally aswell by locking one hind leg and resting the other! I am just pondering if anyone elses horse does it :(

My gelding, as a 3-5yr old dozed in the corner of the stable, with his bum against the wall..

The toe pointing doesn't sound normal - hints at laminitus - are you sure theres no heat in the feet? Initial stages aren't always obvious...

Definitely no heat or anything she has been checked by the farrier as well and absolutely no signs of it... Its nothing like a normal Laminitic stance as they are just ever so slightly in front and she doesn't stand like it anywhere else just in the stable when she is resting in that position... There is definitely no unsoundness issues with her :confused:

hehee, sounds funny, though toe pointing could be a marker for laminitis.

Captain leans on things, and not just leans but really rests with his legs sticking out. Its one of his many idiosyncrasies.

The minis often stand with their bums against something, usually eachother.

My gelding stands like this after he has had a wizz (always keeps his nose in haynet throughout) he just can't be bothered to sort his legs out again! He also sometimes stand toes out... and sometimes does what normal horses do, rests a back leg.

I've never known of a mare to take this stance though

Has there been any changes to her exercise or the amount of work she does, has her energy levels dropped lately or since she has started to stand like this?

I know that in some cases horses will have a different stance (pretty much how you have described) if they are developing a problem, which could be linked to either the back, pelvis or the hocks, although you have stated she's sound, could be she is sound during work but needs to take the weight off during the end of the day, then again it could be just how she prefers to rest.

I think if you have any concerns what so ever, you should contact your vet, if there is anything even something very minor, prevention is quicker and cheaper than the cure.

It is just really weird... She is a weird horse though!

Could it be to do with her 'growing' she has shot up behind a bit again?

Possibly. Does she look obviously bum high? She would look like that all the time though - not just when at rest in the stable...

Could you ask the vet - speak to them on the phone, or ask them to have a look if they're at the yard for something else?

Our previous blacksmith didn't think our pony had laminitus at first, but it did.

Energy levels etc have increased if anything I have noticed it on and off since she moved into the stable (she never done it in the last stable she was in she rested quite normally) back and everything have been checked recently and there are no problems there... she hasn't had much work recently due to the weather (still ridden or lunged 3/4 times a week though) In every other sense she is completely normal this isn't a new thing she has been in the stable almost a year and every so often i catch her standing like this maybe once or twice a month? (its not to say she doesn't do it when i am not looking though)

Yes she is most definitely bum high at the moment and I have noticed her doing it a bit more since she took the sprout behind.. I am going to send my vet an email just now and ask her advise! I will try and get some photographic evidence but knowing my luck she will stop doing it
