Met a poor lady today that had been looking after a friends dog (greyhound) she knew very well. She had opened the boot to put the lead on and it had shot off and dissapeared accross the fields (leaving her dog).

This was yesterday and 24 hours later no sign and a frantic lady looking everywhere. Luckily a happy ending see http://www.shoestringeventing.co.uk/my-blog.htm but don't these things happen so easily!

Phew, thank goodness it came back.

A girl lost our dog in the forest about three years ago - she felt awful but she had never been given permission to let the dog off the lead and to be honest I couldn't even look at her.
However the bitch came back safe and sound after four days (all local sheep were intact!) so we think someone had caught her and kept her in and then let her out when we kicked up a fuss in the local press etc.

My own dog tanked off into the undergrowth twice in recent weeks, once for 15 minutes, once for half an hour (revenge for me going off on holiday and leaving him, methinks

) and it is the most horrible feeling

Thank goodness she got the greyhound back, I love a happy ending

I totally agree that it can happen so easily - Islay nearly caught a cat about six months ago when I got home, opened the back door of the car, grabbed them both to put their leads on and missed her collar... she was out of the car and across the road before I could blink

Very fortunately all ended happily there too, the poor cat got away safely

Thank heavens there is a happy ending, but as said it can happen so easily. Years ago some people brought a friends bitch to our stud dog (typical bitch due for mating when owners on holiday!). They opened the boot of the car to get her out and she legged it. Despite us being almost straight after her she was missing for over 24 hours but luckily was found fit and well. We decided against mating her after her traumatic time but she had obviously been busy whilst on her jaunt as produced a litter of collie crosses 9 weeks later.
