*Separation Anxiety :)

Hello all!

I have been offered use of a field in the village (YAY!!!!) so I can finally have mare nearer to home however also means I need to find her a friend *gulp*

I am really not exited about getting another one - the last one we bought (yearling) died. Unbeknown to us she had a HUGE worm burden, vet said damage done before we got her and nothing we could have done, traumatic death, still raw, long story, don't want to talk about it thankyouverymuch :)

Soooooo apart from being super paranoid about migrating redworm :( ........ I have several needs, mainly being: Po has to be healthy, good in traffic and absolutely NOT be bothered about being left alone for short periods. Logistics dictate that, initially at least, I'll need to walk both of them a mile to their turnout and I'll have to do that separately sometimes and also I will need to take mare out for work and possibly vice versa, also separately at times......

What do you think my chances are of finding a po who isn't bothered if their friend disappears from time to time? Are they like hens teeth? I know some will live 'happily' by themselves but would think that things would be different when they're in a pair dynamic? Your thoughts, as ever, much appreciated.:D

If you were to approach one of the charities, I'm sure they would be able to provide a pony to your requirements. They are always in need of good homes for their companions and will be honest with you about their temperaments, which might not be the case in a private sale. If you get a pony which is happy to be left and start as you mean to go on, separating them for short periods regularly, I'm sure they'll be fine.

We've 2 ponies, and I have to say I'm sure if you take one out leave the other from the start it's so much easier. First winter they had 6 weeks neither went anywhere, no other ponies in sight, and they did call like mad when one went out, but 3 years on as it's such a regular thing now that each day pretty much one is ridden / goes off in the trailer the other stays behind that frankly neither is bothered for more than 2 minutes, or not at all if there's exta hay or food.

We also had issues at shows, however after sneaking one out in the trailer to the show down the road and the other hacking there, then keeping them out of sight of each other right to the last couple of classes they suddenly realised it wasn't sooo bad and the other is about if not in sight/earshot, and have never since played up at a show at which they've both been when one is untied and goes off to compete. A full haynet helps though.

If you want a companion pony or one to just troll around with kids now and again, a veteran might suit your needs, much more likely to understand that their field mate will come back after a while. I'm sure most charities are knee deep in them.

Great advice/experiences thank you.

Pearlsasinger (I always have to sing the next line when I read your name Arrrggh! lol) I had thought of that actually. I'm not far from Bransby so maybe they would have 'someone' suitable? Thanks :D

That gives me hope Dubsie, especially as there are no other neds nearby :( Noted about splitting them from the start *nods* thank you :D

Elsiecat - I'm in North Lincs.
Hi JillA - yep think that's useful. I'm also undecided what height to get? Lead rein so Grandson could ride? Except he screams when he gets on small ponies and screams more until you put him on a something bigger. Lovely. Lol. Or something bigger that annoyingly tiny daughter can hop on or something bigger that said daughter can possibly compete on? Gah.

We have three for this reason, but typically the last little cob I've just brought will happily stay on his own, he's only 2yrs old and far more sensible than his other much older friends.
When I went to view him I took him out of the field away from his mate and he was fine. So I'm sure you can find one its just a case of testing it out before you buy if you can.
