How efficient are grazing muzzles?

I recently did a highly scientific experiment which involved poo counting.....

When muzzled all day for turn out and given her net and feed at night, Olive does 3-4 poos within a twelve hour period.

When she had her muzzle off for four hours of her turnout and had the same amount of hay and feed, Olive did about 7 poos within a twelve hour period.

That's a lot of grass munched in four hours!

Like I said - highly scientific.

Results show - the muzz works!

Just had the vet out to mine to bloodtest and discuss his management due to footiness after the spring flush started. Vet said of grazing muzzles...
"Greenguard will limit the horse's eating by approx 50%."
"Bucket-type muzzles (referring to my defunct Shires one) will reduce grass consumption by 70%"

He said a Greenguard is a good option for my horse and he CAN stay out with it on 24/7, so long as he is monitored carefully. He said the more time out the better to keep him moving about.

I did a similar count and had very similar results. They certainly work!

Stupid question but people who use greenguards...when you attach the muzzle to the headcollar do you have the holes going horizontally or vertically?

My cob is in a greenguard through the day and best friend at night (as he's mastered the best friend SO WELL I don't think it limits him at all!) but his lips have looked a bit sore and didn't know if the greenguard was meant to go on 'a certain way'...i got mine 2nd hand so no instructions:o
