Does anyone want to give me some tips on plaiting up a horse, was hoping a friend would do it the night before a show with needle + thread, but as she cant, i'm going to have to do it-probably the next mornign with bands...
So Any Tips?
Thankyou So Much

Section all of mane into how many plaits you want remembering you want an odd number down the nect and the forlock making it an even number.
Damp mane and then plait it tightly and put band in and then fold in half and then half again and then put a band around it.
Just keep practising

Oddly, I have just finished watching a video on VideoJug on how to plait a mane and tail. I can send you the link if you want.

It recommended using egg white to make the hair easier to handle, and not putting any mane/tail conditioner on because it'll make the hair slippy.

Plaiting is very straightforwards - its the same pattern every time.

Keep them tight, band the bottom, then sew up - its pretty easy. I think its easier than bands.

Pass the thread through the band, then take it throught the top of the plait, at the crest. Stitch the loop thats formed together, then repeat pulling the end into the top of the plait and it should for a nice neat ball. Stitch it in place.

BTW - don't use egg white - it will smell. I use setting lotion - less than a pound from Wilkos, lasts ages.

Well I cant do bands anymore, i find stitchin soo much easier.

Section the mane into an odd number of even sections, I tend to have sections as wide as my plaiting comb whichis about an inch and half maybe.

Plait them as tight as you can, the key to good plaits: the tighter the plait the easier they are to roll and better they look. Put band on at bottom.

I find this really helps my plaits aswell, roll the bottom part up so you sort of have a stub lol (does that make sense?) Just so that the loose bit at the end of your plait is up and out of the way.

Then roll the plait, in half and half again, for banding you then put the band around the plait but I cannot do that anymore, the fall out

Get a bit of thread about one arms length and thread through needle to half way so you have a loo, tie a knot at the bottom, cut off loose bits.

Then put your needle through from the bottom of your plait (after rolling) and up through the other side. Leave a bit of loose thread at the bottom. Take the thread round to the right of the plait and through the loop of thread, pull tight. Go back through the middle from the bottom of the plait and through to the other side and round to the left, back up the middle again and pull tight.

To finish loop the needle through a stitch you did last and tie a knot. cut off excess thread.

Im sure that made no sense but thats how I do it

They are plaiting the mane on the wrong side in that video!!!!

I particularly like the bit where it says "makes the horse look neat and tidy". I think a better caption on that bit would be "this horse is well practiced at looking like a donkey"

But if you ignore the bit of them plaiting on the wrong side, I do think these videos are very helpful - I keep watching ones about sharks teeth so I can try and learn to do them!
