how experienced do you have to be to go hunting?

I went last season for the first time with my own mare... who is (like me) as green as grass and a bit loopy.

We both loved it, although she had absolutely no brakes. She kept charging up to the front of the field and I thus ended up meeting all of the field masters and the huntmaster. No one seemed to mind, so no problem there (but it will obviously depend on the hunt). Eventually I tucked in behind a large ID gelding who was built like a brick sh*thouse and I used him to
stop.
I am a novice at this lark, had been jumping about 70cm fences in riding lessons and ended the day's hunting with a vague recollection of jumping big ditches and hedges whilst grabbing handfuls of mane and keeping my heels down.

We didn't part company (surprisingly) and I would describe the day as absolutely terrifying, but I couldn't stop grinning like an imbecile all day. It has since improved my confidence in my abilities and my mares abilities and strangely it also seems to have calmed the mare down as well.

Here ends the ramblings of a novice who can't wait for next season.

Hi i would go for it.
I would introduce yourself to the secretary at the meet, when you pay your cap and explain that it is your first time and they may recommend someone to look after you.
I would not recommend using someone elses horse as a breaking system though as not everyone is sympathetic and it is dangerous.
Good luck

Absolutely correct Winterhorse....... using another horse is not the best idea. However, at the time, it was the only option open to me. Also, the large ID in question was being ridden by my friend and I knew the horse was about as likely to kick as a brick sh*thouse....

I think the fact that skye has access to an experienced horse is a bonus. Go for it... there has to be a first day for everyone, so get it over and done with, is my humble opinion....

i wouldn't worry about it! go and have some fun! i took a bunch of kids hunting last year and one of them had only just come off the lead rein!

speak to your local hunt sec. find out a good meet to go to and when you get there find someone who can keep an eye out for you and make sure you get home safely (you can bet you won't be totally familiar with the country and will go places you've never been before)

have fun!!

Go for it you'll be fine. If your hunt is like the one I go with they'll hook you up with someone to keep an eye on you. I had loads of people keep coming up to me and asking me if I was ok.

It was my first hunt and my horse's and he was fabulous, still in his snaffle and superbly behaved, little bit of a wuss on some of the fences but that's normal for him lol.

Have fun
