How far away should a placing pole be from a jump

As above, we were doing some free school jumping over the weekend. The boy seems to enjoy the fun.
However I want to make sure that he is still learning at the same time. I did not think about placing poles in front of the jump for free schooling this weekend.
What is the norm with pole placement ? I normally work on 2.5m for trot and 3m for canter under saddle. However its hard to regulate his speed whilst free jumping however I am trying to work on that
Any tips please.

I work the same as for a bounce fence i.e approx 12ft or 4 normal human strides. I count 2 human strides for take off or landing, and 4 per normal horse stride, therefore between the pole and the fence I want 2 strides for landing over the pole, and 2 strides before taking off over the fence. Oh god that probably doesn't make sense :o That's if he's cantering into the fence :)

i would not use a placing pole for him, he is doing a really good job at looking for his stride without one and if you leave him he will learn to look after himself.

What you do need to do, to help him see where to take off, gauge the height, make a better shape and to be fair on him, is to use a pole or anything solid under the fence, once it got up to a decent height he was trying but not jumping as well as he could because the single pole was hard for him to assess.

Agree with this^^^.

Put a take off pole underneath and fill the jump in a bit more. He knocked it down because he's not seeing it until late and then found it hard to gauge.

Thanks for the tip :)
