Both our horses were bought within the 50 mile distance if only just. One of them had been imported from France, but when we went to view him & buy he was only 50 miles away.
I honestly feel that for the majority of us we don't need to travel huge distances to find the ideal horse. The only reason we do is because of the lure of the internet. Many people only look on the intyernet & there are many more ways to source your ideal horse without the net.
Horse 1 passed on to me by a friend - I had told her when she got him if she ever was selling to put me first in the queue as he was my ideal horse. His friend came from a rescue centre so both sort of found me in a way. I couldn't have found two nicer horses had a gone to the ends of the earth.
Mine was only about 30 minutes down the road (owned by a friend of a friend so heard about through word of mouth, he was never advertised as such). I would happily travel a fair distance but as i currently don't have my own transport the cost of hiring someone to get the horse home would be a factor, I couldn't really afford another £500 for transport if horse were already at the top of my budget!
My mare came from fairly close to home - Buckingham to Henley so maybe 30 miles? Then my gelding slightly further, Worcester, so thats probs about 75 miles? But he was to loan and there are definately fewer horses around available on loan than to buy, especially that are able to move yards.
Latest purchase was in Dover so much further away!!
I found mine on the internet and just had that 'feeling'. He was in Lincolnshire and we live in Porsmouth, so well over 200 miles away. Good excuse to make a weekend of it and it was the best thing we did. I did, however, enquire locally via press, recommendation, etc but just couldn't find anything local that gave me the 'feeling'. I think its a bonus if you find something local and it would have certainly saved us a lot of money but I don't have any regrets and feel I kept my options open by not limiting the distance to travel.
Furthest was daughter's first pony, located over 250 miles away but I persuaded OH that Cornwall was on the way to Wales from Hertfordshire - more or less
The main trouble with travelling that far is that you feel more obliged to buy as you don't want a wasted journey. And buy him we did!
I found mine 10 mins away from my house, I wouldn't travel over 100 miles. And even then it would have to be something fantastic to make me drive more than 20.
I am amazed so many people found their horse within their vicinity... I guess it depends where you live because back when I was looking, there was not a chance in hell that I would have found one that I liked within 1hr drive from me that just happened to be on sale!!! I think there, at any point in time, you'd be lucky to find one horse for sale... even if it wasn't so great.
number one was 60 miles,
number two was 350 miles one way, that was a nice drive with 3 kids,we left at 3 in the afternoon and got back at 9 in the morning, then off to work
my new one is only 56 miles and coming in 3 weeks
yah !!!!!
Chancer - well I went from London to Hastings to see my perfect mare, and on the way back stopped at the breeders place in Kent and there he was.
Farra - drove London to Stanstead, flight to Edinburgh, hired a car to drive another 80 miles up to Kenmore - but she was worth it. Could not find anything like her out of Scotland.
My first pony a 14.2 coloured I got about 2 miles from my house.
My second horse was 20 minutes away.
And murphy was just up the road.
None were advertised on the internet either.
I would travel to see a horse, just lucky to know people who was selling.
Definately a day trip. Think the max Ive gone to buy a horse was a 4 hour drive each way. But I have bought unseen (only video footage) from Wales, other end of the country completely (Im NE Scotland)...! He was only a 3yo so I hoped he wouldn't have had enough time to be "ruined", and basically I couldn't find a 15.2hh pure Welsh D anywhere else!
I'd probably travel abroad if it was for something special though. In the future, I would like a pure Iberian so that'll likely be some trip!
