Question in title??
Would you go miles away just to keep your horse at the right yard or is the distance that your horse is from where you live quite important to you??
Im currently clocking up a 40 mile round trip to my yard :o

My yard is 15 minutes away (7 miles). I am so happy there that it is totally worth the 28-mile journey each day. I used to keep Ellie half a mile away, but am far happier at the yard we're at now!

I travel all of 3 miles to see my horses. Very convenient in the winter when the car was snowed in!

I've actually moved my home closer to my horses though! Used to be 10 minutes, but when the lease on my house was up I intentionally looked for somewhere close to my horses.

I have lived up to 20 minutes away from the horses and I hated it - you're talking nearly an hour round trip before actually doing anything with them!

On the other hand I am very lucky - I keep my horses on my own (rented) land. If I had to move them from there, I would do my utmost to find the right yard, but I wouldn't want it more than 10 minutes from home.

Mine are 30 mins away which is rubbish :( Unfortunately there is a lack of decent yards in the area so I'm stuck for the time being. I'd love to be able to go up twice a day but I can't justify a 2 hrs travelling time so have to make do with once

I was at a yard about 10 miles away not the best journey so could take anywhere from 20 to 40 mins to get there and I went morning and evenings, we were both happy but when I found a yard 5 mins from home and work I decided I had to give it a go.

It was a nice yard and I made some lovely friends, but everything just kept going wrong, he were there for a year and I think he was in work for four of those months! Enough was enough, so decided to move back to original yard and see if our luck changed and six months on my horse and I are very happy to be back and will not be wanting to move again!

So I now know for sure the extra travelling is worth it for me :)

Thats the same as me, my yard takes around 40 mins to get to as its not on straight roads either so Im piddling along on country lanes.
Its quite frustrating actually there are some days when you just want to nip up the yard for a quick visit but I know I have a 40 min drive to get to him first!

my loan is a 10 minute drive from home and work-the distance is very important to me for time and money(disel) and being on diy i have to get there twice a day most days and wouldnt be able to manage that if yard was miles away x

My yard is 35-45mins away (only 19 miles but rubbish road). He is on part livery due to my work commitments so need to know that the care they give him is what I would. The care is fantastic so if i cant go up for a day or so he is looked after. Peace of mind is worth the journey. Just have to remind myself of that every now and again when stuck behind a tractor!

I know it's so annoying and then when I do go up after work at about 7pm I find myself rushing to get everything done for the 2 of them and never feel like I have any time to just be with them as I feel I waste so much time on travelling. Although it's a nice yard, quiet, good grazing and a fab indoor school, so I have to keep reminding myself of that! I take it you're on a good yard too hence not wanting to move them closer to home?

Just out the back door - which is great!

The two yards we were on before moving so they could be at home were both around 5 mins drive. We've always been completely DIY so had to be up twice a day and when I first bought my lad I was still at school so had to get up early to go to the yard first. I wouldn't have even looked at a yard further away. It also meant I've always been within easy walking distance (20-30 mins) if necessary. Luckily both yards were great so I've not had to compromise at all. :)

About 15-20 mins, but its a nice drive and I LOVE the yard. Plus the yard is one of the best in the area on price £110 a month for 24/7 turnout, stable, indoor, outdoor, XC course and ALL adlib hay and straw. Therefore the money i waste in petrol I save on hay and straw - in fact I probably save some! Plus there are livery services availiable which I will use in winter - £2 for feed/rugs and turnout which I would probs spend that in petrol getting there!

20 mins from home - but 5 mins from work - weekends suck in the winter.

there is a yard 2 mins from my house but i am not convinced that it would be the right move as I am DIY and the majority of the yard is full livery, so I am worried i would be very lonely and daren't make the move!

This far :) Closest paddock is 20' from the back door.

Barns ----> House (under those trees somewhere)
This is the back door of the barn, the front is closer.

Mine is maybe 15 miles. I've never clocked it but it takes about 20 minutes to get there from home and about 10 to get there from work.

Being close is VERY important to me. I need to go to the barn every day as my horse needs to be worked daily. If I didn't like the yard, or if it had glaring issues, I'd travel further but as it is, I pay more than I might for the closeness. My daughter has found some yards that charge up to $150 or more less than what I'm paying but I'd be driving significantly further and might not be able to get out every day.

Out of my front door, walk across the field, i'm there.

The yard being close is very important to me as the horses have taken up more and more of my time. I have never travelled more than 7 miles to a yard, usually much less

Yup you sound the same as me lol!
Yeah its a nice yard but I havent done a winter there yet & I know I will get bored of the journey. We are just about to get another for my OH to ride & I know he is going to start moaning about the journey-it was bad enough convincing him to learn to ride let alone get his own hoss!
We was going to move to the area that we have moved him to, but tobe honest we dont want to now & its going to get to the point where the journey is going to put us off the yard.

Enfys your place looks amazing Im very jealous!!

My horse is kept about 1.5 miles away from where I live. I don't drive so I don't have much choice, although I do love it were I keep him (even if the hacking is rubbish)!
