How far do you walk your dogs daily?

I was musing about this last night when someone commented how well muscled Marty was looking - obviously a lot of that is due to his breed, genetics etc as I don’t consider I give my dogs huge amounts of exercise.

I’ve started recording my walks on my Garmin (because I’m sad like that!) and I’ve found I walk anything between 2 and 4 miles daily with them, with each mile taking approx 22 minutes (allowing for pee stops etc)

I wondered if that was average? Just curious really 😊

The dog in work, about 10-20 minutes in the morning depending on how and about 40 minutes to an hour in the evening with a lot of training included either on walks or training days. He's ripped. I do walk pretty fast.
Oldie, a few short walks a day. I made a rod for my own back making him too fit but he is taking retirement better than I thought :p

Oh - sounds like my lot get about the same as your boy in training!!!! Poor Amy is 12 now, I wonder if I should be slowing things down for her.....(not really, she is the only one off lead at the moment and she races around for the whole walk 😄)

I dunno how far-30 mins in the morning, 30-40mins at lunchtime, 30-60 mins in the evening depending on whether I am riding/they've been at home all day etc. or they get 30mins of 'stuff' in the paddock in the evening-games, agility, fetch etc. If they're at home they get more paddock time, if at work then they'll get two short sessions of play in my coffee break as well as the lunchtime walk. Generally one longer walk weekend days with one shorter plus paddock play/scentwork. they're both pretty muscly and slim but also entire which helps I think.

He's also tracking, doing retrieves, jump and a-frame, send-outs, six hide searches, barking, escapes, flights etc lol. This will probably be his last year competing so I need to keep a good balance. Ironically the other one would probably be able to compete til he dropped, I just have no control and I can't stand the stress of not knowing whether he'll perform or just say 'Eff You' and bugger off :p

I’ve been using my phone to count steps for me (just realised it could do that). Leaving out general steps at work, I think the dogs are getting about 5 miles a day.

These days the old lab goes for 2 x 15-20 min oap walks - in his prime he would do at least 1 x 30min and 1 x 60 min fast walks with ball throwing added.

The new one is kind of having to tag along on the oap schedule, thankfully she is pretty low energy/work drive. I’m taking her out at lunchtime for tennis ball retrieval for 15 mins in addition, and will pimp her out to friends on weekend for some longer walks

mine get about an hour in the morning all off lead, collie cross walks in a sensible way and the young terrier races around all of the time, they get about 20 mins in the evening half on lead. i feel they could have more but i cant really manage more. my fit bit says i do about 6 to 8 miles a day. not sure how accurate that is...

Mine get between 3 and 4 miles each morning, three quarters of it off lead on the shore and heathland and the last quarter road work on lead. Lots of freedom in a large garden during the day, some training, retrieves etc and various outings . Every afternoon is different, some busier than others.

Interesting reply Druid. I think we are all different in what we enjoy with our dogs. I used to belong to a competitive obedience club and did much more than I do now, but I still loved free walks with my dogs. They all adore their walks and I enjoy walking.
Obviously you prefer training and so do your dogs.

I’d like to free walk but doesn’t work for my over sharp freak. He gets about 4km around the block about twice a week out of principle but not convinced he enjoys it much- he’s so overstimulated but unable to burn that energy. I’m trying to increase the road work so he gets less excited about being out but it’s a frustrating exercise! He does heel work rubbing against my leg on road or CaniX, doesn’t ‘get’ loose lead walking at all even aged 3. We CaniX 5km twice a week and he does agility for an hour group session once a week and a few 10min training blocks at home. Off lead he needs attention you can’t just walk a mile and expect him to still be close so that’s always training and usually only about 30min or so before I see the signs his attention is running out. He’s a calm and content dog in the house and perfectly fit enough. I’d like to have the time to go on 10mile wanders with my dog pottering along sniffing things but I’m not sure he’ll ever be that settled out in the real world.

I think that sounds ace personally :) I find the walk at the beginning of the day helps me gear up for work (unless its exceptionally gorgeous and then it just makes me want to take a day off lol) and the one at the end-or the play time helps me unwind. The lunchtime walk is on lead only as its a surburban type park, they seem to love it as much as the woods though as there are so many dog smells! And its surprising what a 40min march in walk does to them tbh. I am inconsistant in how much/often I train them or do different activities-they are pet dogs and I have other commitments so its not like I am competing or anything like that.

Sadly I couldn’t conceive of being up in time to walk my lot for over an hour before I went to work 🙄 (I’m not a morning person) plus the greyhounds go on strike after 3 miles 😄

Nor me! Mine gets a toilet break in the morning and a walk of anything from 15 mins to 1 hour in the evening, with a toilet break in between.

On the weekends I usually take him somewhere new. He's happy to do as little or as much as I want really, and anything over half hour sees him absolutely sparko for the rest of the evening and the following day.

Just to add, both of mine are pets first and foremost, my sofa and the amount of fleece blankets in the house is testament to that :p

The 'depending on how' was meant to end 'late I am for work' :p

I didnt mean anything by it, just that I dont take anything we do very seriously-I am the same with the pony tbh, I try lots of stuff but I never have a plan. I would blame the elderly parents, special needs step kids and a demanding job but basically I just lack commitment :p

But you don’t let them sleep on your bed..... 😱😱😱😛

I’m still always late for work even without walking the dogs 😳

4 miles a day during the week, broken down into half hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, where we do hillwork with a ball, parachute training or go to agility/come out hacking.

Weekends if we dont have a flyball competition we can do anything from 6-10 miles throughout the day. Normally that's one long walk around a country park somewhere in the morning and then an evening stroll in the local park with no toys.
This BH we did an epic 13.3 mile walk over in Kent! Neither of us wanted an evening walk by the time we had got home from that!

Out of the shooting season, black lab and pug both go out together for about an hour in the morning (mostly off lead, sometimes swimming at the beach too). They have access to the garden most times during the day (we are retired) and have another hour`s walk\run in the late afternoon, earlier in the winter before dark. Pug can keep up with anything mostly that the lab does, except he doesn`t swim out so far. In the season, lab is working about once a fortnight and usually comes home very tired initially.

This time of year they get 2 longish walks about an hour of fast walking, no idea how far that is. I train about 3 times a week, only 10 minutes a pop.
Come July when the poults arrive they will be out from sunrise pretty well all bloody day. Not always walking, some riding on the mule, but lots of dogging in and sitting and staying. :).

I know that working people always say walking has no benefit and should just do training but like Chiffy I love walking with them. Again, why it didn't work having a spaniel, I do see that you can't walk them! I imagine CC's working GSDs are the same? You do see people walking with relaxed GSDs but I assume they are more pets?

What I will say is that mine are always looking for something to 'do' on a walk. Which is why I try to engage them rather than let them make their own mischief (hunting for bottles and cans, which I'd really rather they didn't). With the older one I would do a lot of mountain climbing, he would love to pull me up (and then pull me back down again, ouch). The younger one is obsessed with sticks and water and loves swimming. I do walk them in town/do roadwork but they are usually itching to get to the park for some fun.

The oldies have about 30 mins morning and evening and no longer attend any classes. Not like our racing days when it was minimum 2 hours a day plus training (I've packed some weight on :p)

Sharkpup is just shy of 7 months and I'm conscious of not overdoing it with a puppy but he's absolutely doing my crust in and I'd love to chuck him up a mountain or on a bike already. Still just 20 minute walks plus brain games for him - he's done puppy school, ringcraft and has just started foundation agility.

I'm off work today and have visiting spaniels, they had 3.5 miles this morning which will do them for the rest of the day, although spaniel #2 would take the same again if offered. No-one told him he's a show type!

According to the activity thingy on the phone, its between 5-8 miles a day, but that's divided into about 2 miles in the morning and how knackered I am/how much its raining in the evening!

He's always thrived on long walks, and got a bit chubby and stiff when we lived in Ireland and weekday walks were limited. Now we're back in the UK and getting fitter, he's looking normal again and towing me along to get to the bunny field!

Awwww you see spaniel number 2 could come and live me with me, he and Millie could tire each other out! Those eyebrows ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😄

Little'un gets about a mile in the morning, a small part of which is off lead, GSDs just have free running in the field for about 20 - 30 minutes. After work Freya has on average 2 miles road work , Evie (who is nearly 11) a little less, then they are in the field with me while I poo pick etc. Pickle may have a short walk across fields, or just a bit of ball fetching in my field.

I had a tracker on my collie 2 years ago and found she covered about 3x mores miles than me when on off lead walks, as she goes ahead and back and sometimes behind and circling!

they go on runs quite a few times a week, from 2.5 to up to 8 miles sometimes, walks vary, sometimes they just get up to mischief- used to be at my horses and now around a lake due to husbands new job. other times we go on a power walk with the kids in the buggy for about 2-3 miles (I can walk as fast as some people jog!)

varies hugely by the day and what we are up to as I have little humans!

My collie gets a half hour or so of fetch in the morning and then comes to the stables in the evening and runs around there for 2 hours or so with other dog friends, often with a walk on the way back in the forest of around 2 miles if its not raining.
Shes happy with that (or she appears happy anyway, and sleeps most of the rest of the time)
At the weekends she comes to events if I'm riding or scoring, walks the course and is generally sociable with everyone and then snoozes the whole of the following day pretty much.
