How far is your tack room from the stables?

I just wondered how far is your tack room from the stables? Is it right next door or do you have to walk a good few yards? I have room for a small tack room where our new yard will be positioned or a much larger one in a building 30 yards away. Further to walk but a much nicer tack room - oh what to do!

I only have stables and no tack room and bring my tack to the field using my car. When it is very dry I can drive right up to the stables. What I do in practice is to take the horse to the tack. This is not a covered area so when it is raining the saddle gets covered while I am tacking up. I find I really do not mind doing this.

I appreciate this is vastly different to your set up, but if you cannot do both I would go for the big tack room especially if it is big enough to have a grooming / tacking up area in it. I love the idea of a grooming area where you can stand your horse next to all your kit rather than bring all your kit to the horse's stable each time.

at our yard the tack room is about 10 yards away from my stables, and about 20 yards from where I have to park the lorry. It is lovely to have it so near, but why don't you have the larger one and invest in one of those mobile saddle racks so you can push stuff to and fro?

If by stable you mean 'place where I usually keep my horses', then it's 3 miles exactly.

We put the tack in the back of the car, park outside the field, catch horses and tie to a piece of string between two trees (yes really), and tack them up all tied in a line like the cavalry.

If someone forgets a girth or a hat, we have a big swap around until we have the best solution, which is usually me riding without a hat, or bareback on the fattest pony.

I'd go with the larger tack room slightly farther away, and lead the horse to the tack if possible.

About a mile.

I would choose a larger tack room and walk the extra. You can never have a tack room that is too big!

Mine is behind my stable :-). I find that ones like that are more secure as well because thieves are unlikely to go past a horse to steal a saddle, although my yard has lots of security in place and so I don't worry too much anyway.

Now I feel very spoilt.

We have an American barn with two aisles and the tackroom is in the furthest barn, so those on the other side have to walk down their aisle, outside and into the other barn to get their tack. It's really not too much of an issue tbh, I'd go for a bigger tackroom every time!

Tack is all up at the house....stables are about 100 metres away. I drive down when I plan on riding although I have a box in the back of the car with hats, headcollars and bridles in pretty much all of the time so I just in practice fling the saddles in.

I kept tack at home when I was on livery after a break in anyway so I'm used to it.

Ridiculously close . . . probably about 10 yards round the corner to the barn (where the stables are) but even less from the lorry when we park up to go to competitions.

It isn't a feature I would put massively high on my wish list, but it does make competition mornings very easy for me because I don't have to get the tack out for us to load on the lorry (which is kept somewhere else) - we can just walk it the few steps from the tack/wash room to the lorry . . . at previous yards I've had to spend valuable "get ready" time hauling all the tack out ready for the lorry to arrive.

P

All my horse gear is kept at home, apart from feed bins and the odd rug (in a shed where I keep mine). I haul everything up in the car with me when I need it ... hubby regularly laughs and calls my car the mobile tack room lol

I'd go for both, keep most used items by season up close and use the larger area for storage. My tack room is about 5 metres away from stables but we have a shared lockup in the barn 30 metres away this is what I do.

Mine's right next to stables but isn't huge so I'd go with both if I were you. Small one next to stables for saddles, bridles, everyday stuff and other one for rugs, competition stuff etc.

(I keep my horses at home btw).

Right next door to the stables. I'd go for the bigger one cos tack mounts up like crazy, our tack rooms large but still always bursting at the seams. Also like the idea of using the small one for stuff you want every day then the bigger one for rugs/ miscellaneous stuff/ show gear

My farm is quite spread out, with lots of fields set all around the house, barns and arena facilities. I have two tack rooms; one for people at one side of the farmhouse and one for me and the others who keep their horses up near the house. Most people keep their tack in the tack room down by the arenas though and just take their horses to the hitching rails there and tie up and tack up. It's a nicer tack room with a viewing lounge.

twobearsarthur - how an earth do you manage?

Theres a space outside my stable about 8 ft wide & 3 ft deep. (Internal stables)
Fits two bins for feed/buckets/supplement.
One of those plastic garden chests for rugs
Two bales of hay & two bales of straw. A spade, a fork & a brush.
I don't leave my tack as most insurance companies have ridiculous security clauses to cover tack at a yard so that comes home.
Oh I have a two drawer filing cabinet in that space too for my hat, lunging equipment etc.... Lol.
I do have acres of excellent turn out post & rail fencing or stone wall. A floodlit arena and direct access to hundreds of miles of Pennine Bridleways with absolutely no road riding. So it's a compromise I can make.

my tackroom is at the back of my stable. Every livery has their own tack room directly off their stable. Brilliant!!!

I've always wondered how this is done, it's going to sound silly but is there another small cupboard type room at the back of the stable?

IMO definately closer is better, so much easier. My tack rooms have always been next door to the stables, I've just had a stable block built at my new house and I use one of the stables as a tack room, I built it with this intention but it means its there as a 3rd stable should I ever need it. Means I can just tie the horse up right outside the tack room.
