How far should I go?

I have entered a couple of what I would class as "local" dressgae competitions - each at a different venue, but both will take anywhere between 45 mins to an hour to get there.

I have had horse just over a year, but have only done hacking with him.

I'm not bothered about winning anything, just think he needs a bit of competition experience, which will make him easier to sell when it comes round to it (he is 10).

However, it has been suggested to me that I am going to far. Any comments?

Rubbish

Seriously the minimum travel time for me is usually an hour and a half. Providing you have decent transport travelling up to an hour should cause you no problems.

I was limiting my competition range to about 45min (seems reasonable) until I asked my Mum how far she'd be happy to tow me to a competition, and she said about an hour and a half! I have found loads of places within 45-75 min of my yard so am sticking to that. Obviously though I'd rather go somewhere closer, but having a range like that gives you so much more flexibility!
I would say an hour is more than acceptable, especially as you have an 'aim' of selling the horse!
ETS obviously if I could tow myself and/or was affiliated, I'd go much further!

45 minutes-1 hour is about average for us, mum enjoys taking me out competing so we quite often go further. we have realised that MKEC and Norton Heath are about 80miles from me so if nothing is on then we will go there. 2 hours max travelling for me, at the moment anyway

i think they thought it may be to far as we are not sure about horses history and how much competing he has done (I would hazard a guess on nothing), and the fact he hasnt been in a trailer for a year he would get stressed out...

Why dont you take him for a short journey before your competition? Then you can see how well he travels, loads etc.
You dont have to go anywhere in particular, just out for a journey and back home again. Or you could go somewhere and go for a short hack then bring him home. Then you can decide about a suitable length of journey.

my dad really goo he just goes were are we going this weekend and just just drives lol.
he said he like taking me the shows because i goes around the show ground saying o yes thats my daughter and her fabulous horse lol.
helga has only been to shows 30 mins tops before i got her but i find with her the long in the wagon the more calm she is.

It depends entirely where you are in relation to the competitions you want to compete in

I travel anything from 50 minutes upwards....and will be travelling for 5 hours each way next month.

The only question i would ask, is if there is actually anything closer that was at the same level ? If i wanted to compete unaffiliated i would have the choice of many more venues within 30 minutes of my yard, so perhaps the person questioning you is thinking along those lines
