Hi,
I just wondered if you could give me an idea as to how long it takes for a splint to settle and become pain free?
My mare had a knock to her lateral splint bone. there has been heat, which comes and goes. I was given some diclofenac cream to put on for 10 days (don;t think it had much effect) at 2 weeks (now at 9 weeks). tolerance to pressure on the splint varies day to day, but she's not happy to bear weight on that leg (when picking up opposite leg). She doesn't appear lame, although when pushed into fast/active trot on lunge she is unlevel behind.

My two year old is currently on his 3rd week of box rest after taking a knock or kick in the field, he has a small swelling to the medial splint bone.
vet gave me Compagel to use three times a day..the splint is still there but appears to be going down *fingerscrossed*

A friends sec D mare threw a huge lateral splint about three months ago. She's been using Tensolvet 4 times a day and the splint has shrunk but is still visible, the mare is also lame if pushed. She has been xrayed and there is no sign of fracture so her vet says it's just a matter of waiting :(

most splints will appear and harden and settle in 6 to 8 weeks. if after 9 weeks the horse is stll sensitive to the splint i would advise x ray. as she is not happy to weight bear i would suspect a sequestrium. i would call your vet for a full and thorough appraisal ASAP.

reaction to pressure on it varies, although yesterday was able to push very hard and no reaction when eating. But standing on it was bad and some heat. There isn't much of a lump to see, it's more of a flat lump that you can feel.
she's been in the field (trying to resolve bone spavin) since it started with occasional lunging to check for soundness.

ofcourseyoucan: what's a sequestrium?
