Have managed to get to my field in driving snow and defrost water tap and padlocks.Have enough food for a couple of days in feedbins. The rest is in the back OH car to see us over Xmas. Cannt drive in even with a 4x4 as my driveway is steep and the car slips backwards as cann't get a grip, so come Xmas day will be humping bags of food over. So how have the rest of you coped in this weather.

I'm not liking it. We havent even had much snow here but its icey and the ground is so hard. Luckily we've still had turnout but the arena has been too hard to ride on. I'm hoping the weather improves by the end of this week. I'm on holiday from 24th-4th Jan and was planning on riding lots!!

Not great - I only have a little car! Yard is down a rural road, which is on a slight hill ... there's been one or two intresting moments! I did abandon it the other evening, in a small parking area and walked up to the yard and back - as just not worth the risk of sliding back down it again!

Y/O has been turning out for me, as the combination of snow and ice and dark on the roads is just a bit too dangerous for my liking! I've been leaving home laterabout 7.30am once it is a bit lighter, to muck out and do haynets/feeds for the afternoon.

If the weather is really bad, then YO will finish off for me in the evenings.

I'll be glad to see the back of the snow and ice - we've had on/off snow and sleet since Thursday. Pretty when it is fresh, lethal when it has frozen over night!

We have 15cm of drifting peak district snow, it will be -4 tonight.
Honestly it hasn't been any different to usual, apart from the odd frozen pipe. My horses go out as usual, fed as usual, rugged as usual. neither of them are in much work at the moment, went for a slow potter around on both today so they weren't too fresh next time I got on.
probably will be more snow tonight too.

Ok so I promise not to moan about mud again................at least you can ride!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sick of this frost...............5 days off and I can not ride - gutted

OOOooh same here! I finished work last Friday but haven't managed to ride once!
The lane outside the yard is still white over and we don't have a school or any other luxury so no riding til it's safe to hack down the lane.

Haven't been to see the horse since the bad weather started, due to the road conditions.

Before you all kill me, he is on livery so that's fine, but it does mean I can't check on him, pester him with snogs, or deliver Christmas presents to the grooms.

Great!
New set of front tyres means I can get up hills and slopes others cant (only an ikkle corsa, not a hardcore 4x4

)
Lock de-icer (fab invention, brill nozzle you stick into the key bit works a treat!) means I can get into my fields.
Keeping a spade in the car just in case, but mostly used that to bust the ice on the troughs.
Most sensible thing I have been told is a) keep your petrol tank full. If you get stranded you can at leat run the car for the heating and b) make sure you have a mobile and in car charger just in case you need help!

Snow snow go away, come back another ..... year!!
Im fed up now, finished work Monday and was hoping to ride etc but our horses are all stuck in. The fields are rutted, covered in snow and rock hard. We are getting to turn out in the school but for about 20 mins each as theres a few horses. Horses seem to have resided themselves to it. Ive walked to the yard as the lanes horrendous and my car slides everywhere. Reckon my xmas break will consist of walking to stables, mucking out, walking home, walking back, mucking out and walking home. Exciting eh

can't complain compared to you all, no snow just not thawed out for days. No water, burst pipes wrecked a load of my stuff including clippers.
Have manage to grit salt etc and even turned out and get to the school
Biggest problem for me is walking on ice and uneven rock hard ground with my bad ankle IT HURTS LIKE HELL

Plus freezing my butt off!!!! and RA not good,

We've had it easy, really. Lots of snow and frozen pipes on a couple of mornings, but they are at home, have gone out in the field for a play and been ridden in our re-surfaced (with snow) arena.

I'd even say it has been fun

The only thing I am finding difficult at the moment is that I am unable to ride as the fields are too frozen, the roads are icy and I don't have a school

Other than that we are coping quite well, even our hosepipes are doing coping at the moment.
I have loved all this snow actually

fed up to the back teeth with it. Because of the awful rain we had for most of November and then the snow, our school has been pretty much out of action since it started. This has meant an awful lot of juggling to try to ride out for quick around the block and into work late but with the snow, can't even do that. My horse is becoming really quite evil as he is getting so bored. I do have a 4 x 4 so can get up to the yard but its just to groom and finish off at the moment

OK, horses are rugged, fed and going out as normal, but they are on holiday due to me having a slight injury, good timing me thinks..... lane is a bit slippy, but have a 4x4 to cope with that.

Starting to get fed up now. At first it was ok, but my small car cant cope with the snow and were down rural roads and yards at the bottom of the hill. So my mums been doing my horse for me as i've got work this week and just trying to get down when I can. We were turning out in the school whil ppl muck out, but its got a bit hard now so just walking in hand. No ridden as snow in the school is to deep. Were in a indoor barn so horses can tie up outside stables too. I break uo on x-mas eve till 4th Jan so was planning on lots of riding, just cant see when i'll be able to start riding or turning out.

Thankfully I keep the horses at home so haven't had to worry about getting to the yard. We've had 8" of snow here, but the horses have still gone out everyday. We have loads of big bale haylage stacked up and the feedbins are full, so I haven't had to worry about that. The worst bits are having to bring water down from the house, trying to push the wheelbarrow in deep snow and the fact that it is Christmas holidays and my daughter hasn't been able to ride yet.

TGM, use a sled to pull the water on, MUCH easier

Cheapo plastic one will survive for a while.

Keep warm.

Everything ok here.My two live out 24/7 and both are rugged. Had to break the ice in the bath as water was frozen. . Hosepipe.Padlock also frozen.
I dont drive so I rely on buses buit if I cant get there the farmer sees to them for me,Im lucky there.
No more snow, just loads of ice everywhere and very dangerous to walk on.

Why not grit your drive so you can drive up it????

If you can't get hold of any grit then buy a bag of economy cat litter at the supermarket and use that, it works the same and is a tip from a canadian lady I used to work with who was well used to dealing with far worse weather than we have here.

Coped fairly well, although my little car got snowed in at the yard from Friday - Tuesday and mum's car got stuck on Friday night because the country lanes around the yard weren't gritted and there are a few steep hills.

Horses were turned out for a couple of hours each day over the weekend and Monday but they have been in for the last two days now the snow is turning into ice, as I don't want to risk them galloping around on the hard ground and injuring themselves. But our old boy is still being turned out for a couple of hours a day as he likes to have a gentle stroll around the field to stretch his legs. The other two have been being turned out in the school for a play. I have been riding in the Indoor Arena when I can, the main problem has been the usual water buckets freezing etc.
