I know it is hard to tell without looking at him in the flesh but those of you with CB's or ID's should have a fair idea. How heavy roughly would you have said my boy was?

He is 17hh aged 4 (still growing) in good condition (not fat!), wears 7ft rugs and has a 56 inch girth which does up to the top hole on his saddle..

Here is a recent pic of him.

I have my ideas, what are yours?

Its only a guess - 600kg? Never had our 17 hander as a 4yo so having to guess! But extweeeemly jealous of you being blessed with a CB - just so stunning. Suffolks and CBs are my fave - so crazy they are both soooooo rare!

Well this is my full ID 4 year old. He is about 16.2 at the moment and his rugs are 6' 9".

We have Dengie Horse Feeds come to our yard with their portable weighbridge and at his last weigh in he was 606kg (weight tape showed him as 545kg!!!). So I would add a bit to that for your boy!!

Thanks all... I think we're aall in the same ball park. I know weight tapes aren't acurate. unfortunately my last attempt to get him on a weigh bridge failed. it was dark though and there was really scary lighting round it, including a glowing neon green control panel - why don't vets make things more horse friendly!!?!

Just looked in my diary and just before she went on the weighbridge I did her with the tape and it came out at 495kg, so quite a defference.

By the way, your boy is stunning.

Dengie Horse Feeds portable weigh bridge is just a small slightly raised platform with a rubber matting on the top - my boy had no problems going on it. If you are on a yard and can get a few people together I am sure you could get them to come out to you...:)

I know... I know someone who works for dengie. I will enquire at the yard but I think most people will think I'm barmy!!

Unfortunately dengie's weighbridge sounds suspiciously like my vet's new one... although I think it was the lighting that worried him before, the fact that it is raised and a different surface can't have helped. He may be big but he is very sceptical of new things!!

My Vet's old one was great. it was the same level as the floor and the same colour too... you just walked on and parked them on it, no questions asked!

My other option is to take my trailer laiden and unlaiden to the public weighbridge and see what that reads... hmmmm

Thanks for the compliments on him... He is gorgeous, but them I am biased!

And btw, I think he's around the 650 - 700 kg mark but my vet thinks less...

My bum high 16.3 3/4 TB 1/4 shire who wears a 6'9 rug was at the vets last week and we took bets on what she weighed. I was nearest with 565Kg. She actually weighed in at 635Kg!

my 17hh Cleveland Mare looks about the same - Yours has a slighty better bum!

Mine is 650, so yours maybe 675-85ish :)

Have you tried the girth and length calculation?
Have you tried a food bribe? - for the bridge that is! :D

Sadly I dont have a good online shot for now,,,, I should find one!

not read the replies yet, but I've got a 17hh ISH in a 7' rug who weighed in at 669kg couple of weeks ago on a weighbridge and he doesn't have an ounce of fat on him

Thanks all.

I suspect if I had enough time I would get him on a weighbridge, however the last time I tried he had colic, it was dark and there was really horid lighing all aound it and about 12 people stood round waiting to do stuff to him - poor lad. Fortunately they felt that treating the colic was more important than geting an acurate weight. Next time we are at the vets I will try to get him on.

Re his breeding, his sire is Oakenbank Grenadier and his Dam is Thomsonbrook First Lady.

Happy Hunter yours is very smart! How tall are you btw? I'm 5ft 10 and look much smaller next to my boy I think! - eek!
