As I don't have a weighbridge handy, does anyone know how to work out the approx weight of your horse. I have found a weigh tape too inaccurate.
I saw a formula in a book, girth x something divided by something else etc. As I am not Stephen Hawking, it didn't work for me.

I go by the weigh tape and Ralphs just over 600kgs!! Mr Lardy........big boned actually!

My 16hh id cross connemara mare weighs 532kg on the weight tape and virtually identical if i use the formula. She is generally 505kg through the winter and at her fatest ever when i have had her got up to 585kg and the least was 496kg.
Not sure how accurate the weight tape is but i find it gives me an indication of if she is putting on or loosing weight.

Most feed websites have a shopping area where you can get weigh tapes from - I got mine from Spillers. They're not 100% accurate but they will monitor weather your horse is gaining or losing. Gertie is 16h and weighs 520kg. Monty is 8.2ish and probably weighs about the same haha

According to my D&H weightape :

16.2 RID approx 660kg

14.1 (approx, not measured him for months & I think he's grown) 4yo Sec D about 430kg

i dont have a weight bridge! on weigh tape my 14.3hh appoloossax newforest weighs 540kg if i did girth by lenght and so on he was less then that but i can not remember what. how heavy would you guys say he should be middle weight he his aswell?

My horse recently weighed at the horsepital was a chunky 792 kg!

I have a measurement/weight table in a book, what is your horse's girth measurement? Thats girth as in all the way around where the girth goes.

If its 70 inches - 178 cm weight is 453 kg
if its 82.5 inches - 210 cm 611 kg.

Sorry to hijack the post, but does the spillers tape go up to 800 kg anybody? Cheers

I use a weigh tape my 15.1welsh d weighs in at 530kg, he was 582kg at the beginning of spring. Needless to say he looks so much better now!! Still a big boy but not at all fat!

I've only used a weight tape on mine and generally use it to monitor his condition rather than for his actual weight.
However he comes up between 496kg and 502kgs which is about what I would expect for a horse his size and build. (15.1hh, tbx)

At his heaviest he was 525kg last summer when he caught me out by proving to be a VERY good doer!!

I use a weight tape on my horse (well I would if she wasn't currently off the scale - it's a bit of a guessing game!) and according to that she's roughly 640kg (80kg ish overweight, she's a 15.3hh middleweight ID X). The thing is, her "mass" (

) is all behind her girth so I bet she weights more in reality. I've always used the same tape though and gone by that plus how she looks, so I know when she is too thin/too fat. I'd love to get her on a weighbridge though!

Now that's interesting because my mare is 567 and looks massively fatter than yours and she's 16.2!

At uni we compared weightapes, weigh bridge and the weigh tape formula. The formula was far closer to the weigh bridge than the weigh tape alone. Its not hard to work out, I had to do it in my exams and I forgot my calculator, got a first in that exam so it must be simple!!

A weigh tape is more for monitoring condition, and there were variation between tapes, I think DH came out most accurate.

I'm the same, don't think weight tapes are that accurate, what do you do if your horse carries more weight behind the girth area like Silmarilions'. My clydesdale x appaloosa is only 15.3 but off the weigh tape,my 16.2 very chunky 75% ID comes in at 625kg but I'd say they weigh about the same tbh.I agree they are handy for keeping an eye on weight gain/loss though.

Sorry to hijack the post but has anybody got a mini shetland of 28 inches, and if so what do they weigh on the tape, mine comes in at 120kg but find that a bit much, don't want to overdose him when I worm him or if he needs bute you see?!
