Well Rio is a good doer although during the winter he dropped off a lot he is now back to where he should be or there abouts (I hope!) but I cant help but think hes still looking a bit portly so what do you think?

He is currently fed on Top Chop Lite, Fast Fibre and Codlavene for hard feed. 18lbs of hay at night (late cut, not great quality but isn't bad) and then 10 hours turnout on very little grass :)

thanks!

His bum looks good but appears to be carrying fat on his belly, shoulders and has a crest. What's his score?

ps. Lovely horse.

hes a stallion so he has a crest whether he is fat or not unfortunately :o and score?

thank you :) looks a bit like a donkey in the pictures took me ages for me to get him to stop following me to take the photos :o

He's gorgeous! If he was mine I'd be happy but I wouldn't want him any bigger so would perhaps be taking measures to stop him eating too much spring grass :)

Looks very healthy and shiny, a credit to you. Can you feel his ribs when you firmly run a hand along his side? If yes, and forgiving the crest in a stallion, I would say yes condition about right. I would weigh tape him now, and then compare weekly. He would not want to be any fatter, and I find it's easier to spot subtle weight gain on a tape than purely by eye if you see them every day.

Stunning horse!

I think he's got a slight tub on his belly, but other than that nothing really too bad! I wouldn't be too worried!

His ribs are easily felt and when hes actually trotting properly you can see them when he moves although he doesnt do that very often :) hes currently in a starvation paddock but is being strip grazed to make sure it doesnt turn into a jungle :) thank you everyone :)

He seems, to me, to have a rather strange neck, both the top and bottom line. Perhaps it's just the photograph. Does he do any ridden work?

Alec.

His ribs aren't easily seen, agree you wouldn't want any fatter tbh... And agree with Alec, too much muscle on the underside of the neck... Does he strain upwards against a contact?

He looks to have a bull neck, but that isn't necessarily anything to do with weight issues or ridden work etc.

I think he does look undermuscled generally though, so maybe not in work at all? Could be wrong

Hes just coming back into work after 4 months off (started working again about 8 weeks ago) and is being reschooled and before i bought him he had never been ridden in a contact just hauled around a lot so everything is new to him at the moment i am aware of the excess muscle he is carrying on the underside of his neck and im working on it :) when i have my laptop i will post a photo of him in ridden work (which is bareback at the moment as he has no saddle)
