I was having a discussion today about how late in the year some horses are born. I have a 16 year old that was born in September.
Anyone have any born this laate or later?

i brought a thoroughbred mare about 15 yrs ago and didnt know that she was in foal.
she foaled on the first frost of the year which was in the middle of october:eek:
as you can imagine she took alot of feeding to keep her in milk thru that winter due to there being no grass.

Juno's birthday is 25th May, and both Meg and Penny are the 1st April!! Biggles' is the 9th March, so no late ones here. I knew a shetland last year who foaled on the 8th Novemeber in Devon.... sadly the foal was still born but fully grown. Just one of those things.

One of my little mares dropped her very unexpected foal this year - January 11th - it was minus 15 degrees that night - 2ft of snow and thick ice and was stable bound for two weeks as completely ice and snowed in - However depite all the added aggro she had a very healthy filly foal that is now 9 mts old - standing taller than her 13.2hh mum and is the most adorable little bundle of black and white fluff I had ever had ! PS when she was born we whipped my dogs coat off his back to help keep filly warm ! Dog had nice new coat bought for him!!

Born this morning at 1.30am, trying to post a picture of him......not mine I hasten to add....I don't know how to post a picture, I have some on Photobucket but think I've had to much gin to work it out now

I dont like seeing them born so late in the year...
how are they supposed to thrive if they dont have that flush of spring/summer grass.

dont like them later than june/july really. ours are 5th may and 17th june off the top of my head :)

as above, earlier the better for age classes!

I was thinking it must be difficult to raise a foal born late in the year but i never thought about January foals born in minus conditions. It must be a more difficult start for them.

I thought the late foals were going to be imports or something- australia, new zealand... Lol. I have a may horse and mid july horse. July is plenty late enough!

I had a febuary foal!!! Remember all that snow a year ago? Starlas baby was born (in a stable) in the middle of all that!
To make matters worse, starla was clipped as I had NO idea until a few months before that she was expecting...

28th November! He was apparently an accident :)

He's coming up for 9 now (although according to BE has been 9 for the past 9months) and is fab, wouldnt change him.

friends horse had a foal in november, the mare escaped to get to the stallion but they didn't think she would take but hey presto 11 months later had a beautiful filly!
My horse was born in february, so quite good for age classes!

Yes it was a difficult start ! heat lamps and rugs - the biggest Straw bed that you can imagine and the most difficult thing was that the foal couldn't go out of the stable as the yard was just covered in ice and just too dangerous - on the plus side she had a lot fuss and handling and is now a dream to do anything with. Mum just had the best hay and as much as she needed. But both are doing great - Filly now being weaned and is very relaxed about it all. Happy Ending !
