...do you give the horse off? im afraid i have to be truely horrible, and school the next day - just for no more than about 10mins, to realign him a little, and get him working again - always find him hard to work again if i give him the day after an event off. he has 10mins the following day, and usually a day off the next, but depending on what we were doing, i might go out for a quiet ride. what do you do? do your horses change after a comp? do you think im hideously mean, and need to be reported?!

I dont think so at all! at the racing yard we had one that had to be ridden the day after it raced as it tied up very badly otherwise!

I always give song a few days off just to chill a bit then a hack, then the next day usually a hack with a normal canter and the the 3rd day back in to some schooling!!

I normally go for a quiet 20-30 minute hack the day after just to check that everything feels OK, then give the horse the next day off, then probably hack the next day and do a bit in the school the day after that - but I'm not exactly competing at top levels! Would be interesting to hear what other people do

I do a quiet hack the day after, as Patches said - just to check everything is in the right place. I would then continue my usual routine but we are only competing at intro level.

Most of the time my horses have Mondays off anyway. He competed yesterday so had today off.
However, say i wasnt around the middle of the week and felt he needed the work i would take him for a hack the day after an event or put him on the walker and then do some gentle schooling.
If hes just been sjing, or dressage i wouldnt mind and continue along our merry way. But if we've been eventing i like to let him have a day out in the field chilling.

depends how far i have travelled to the event. usually give her a day off in the big field the day after an event, so she can stretch, and then start normal exercise the next day.

I give him the day off after the event and hack the next day. After that I go back to normal work. If he was quiet on his hack I'd keep hacking until he was his normal perky self. He's only novice though and I'd give him longer if he was eventing at a higher level. I reckon it generally just depends on how well they come out of it.

The general rule for endurance horses is give them a day off for every 10 miles they competed. So a 20 mile ride would mean two days off... a 100 mile ride would mean 10 days off, though most people give a little more after such a grueling event.

They have mondays off so if event on Sun, then just out on Mon, never just stand in. If event Sat the may hack out quietly the next day before having mon off. If we're off somewhere soonish after they may have to work properly and if they're naughty they may find themselves at a XC course or SJ show!!!

Usually has the day after off - quite often coz I'm knackered too as I drive myself etc! However I will hack sometimes, especially if I'm away mid-week or if it's the beginning of the season and he's had to come home and go straight in the stable overnight. In the summer when he's out overnight I'm less fussed about hacking the next day as he's been able to keep moving overnight to stay a bit looser.

I know lots of people who don't give their horses a day off after an event thinking they get stiff otherwise.

Personally I always give mine the day off after, if its been a particularily tough competition like a 2 day event or something then I may give them 2 days off. I also give mine the day BEFORE a competition off usually as well! But I think it all depends on your horse and what suits. Mine are better if they're a bit fresher on the day (hence day off before) and it makes no difference to them if they get a day off after.

LOL whereas bitter experience has taught me that mine is a gitbag if given the day before off and is best if he has been schooled pretty hard the night before on the flat, or been to a dressage comp!

I normally give horse a light day after the event - chilled hack out or mybe a 20 min lunge then the day after that off (more for my benefit really).
This week she had to have day after off cos of work - grrr!!

I have to admit I usually give mine 2 days off after a horse trials but this also takes into account they could have spent between 6 and 15hours travelling. These days off would be out in the field if for any reason I couldn't turn out then I would gently exercise.
